Yes, I have "looked" at it, but honestly, I'm not exactly sure what to do
with it (yet). I keep thinking that some day, I'll try to understand it
more. I've certainly been impressed by some of the demos, and some of the
results that I've seen others attain are stunning. Just about anything
Jaime does blows my mind at a technical level.

I've played around with it every once in awhile, mostly fudging values on
the demos, but so far, I've never actually incorporated it into any of my
scenes.

I could stick poser models in the chairs. :-) I would guess that 3D cafe
has some models of computer components.

I also think keyboard trays may be a necessity at this point. I'm going to
have to shop around.

Me, my wife, and my daughter. Realistcally, there won't be very many times
when all 3 of us would be there at the same time. I'm still a little
skeptical whether all 3 of us can fit, but we've set our chairs in that
area, and it seems ok, while not leaving a lot of room.

The basement looks great in the photos.

I'll post something in p.o-t Thursday evening if not before. I can tell
you now that Formica countertop cannot be used as a building material.
It will sag under its own weight if not supported on all four sides.
Even if that were not the case, you can only screw into it a half inch.
The formica countertop will only be a cover for a frame which must be
sturdy without it.

You will need some type of leg at the L, but it can be set back far
enough to make room for a chair and knees there. Still, you won't want
to sit on the edge of this desk. I will post a detailed plan Thursday
evening which can be realized with your tools.

Do you have wood or aluminum studs in the wall?

Nice sphere, but you really should replace the carpet with a checkered
plane, since it's the first post of your basement.

What you can't see is how I used too much joint compound, which resulted in
wavey walls at the dry-wall seems. No one notices, if I don't point that
out, though. That and a couple other minor things, like holes that were
just just a tad too big (or too high) for the electrical outlets. We had
someone else do the carpeting, and they did a great job. We just recently
stained the doors and added the base and door trim.

Thanks! I think I'm starting to see what you mean about the frame. In
particular, the miter joint would probably be under a great amount of
stress. I don't mind buying a few more boards, if necessary. I've also
considered possibly needing addtional supports, like the edges, in the
middle. I'd just want to make sure they were not in knee range (i.e. I'd
like to keep them between the chairs).

Wood studs (2x4's), and 1/2" drywall, iirc.

ok, I'm really o-t now... :-/ ...need new group povray.tools.carpentry

Nope, not the first time posted, but my basement scene was my first picture
ever posted here (I was "Slashdolt" back then). That was shortly after I
started working on my "Radio Graves" scene, and I was still a newbie to the
group here, but the basement scene was done a few months prior.

http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.images/thread/%3C3e3154b2%40news.povray.org%3E/?ttop=188582&toff=1450

I guess I didn't get the sphere-on-a-checkered-plane joke back then, but in
my defense, there are two spheres, and the ceiling is kind of checkered
like, and I think I used "quilted" for the floor. ;-)

Oh... You meant my "real basement." Why do I never get the joke until after
I click "Send"? sigh...

Oh well, at least I got to talk about myself, which I always seem to enjoy.

Depends on how much you want to spend. If you've got the scratch for a
couple sheets of 3/4" plywood, then you can support the whole thing with
angle brackets and it could *almost* double as a guest bed. This is the
way I would go. It won't be cheap, but you could be enjoying it by next
weekend.

It can be done with boards as well, but sliding keyboards would be less
convenient and the construction process would take a lot more time. Plus
you would need that center leg, though you could set it back up to
twenty inches (fourteen inches from the corner of the room).

Is that a "real" picture? It looks like a POV rendering, especially the
lighting... I guess it goes to say how realistic some scenes are :-)

Have you tried replicating that same picture?

Yes, even a novice can make pretty realistic scenes. Radiosity + area
lights can do wonders.

>

Not exactly like that. I actually took that picture a couple days ago, long
after my scene was already complete. I've thought that some day I might use
my basement scene as part of a "real" scene, but so far, I haven't really
thought of anything inspiring going on in my basement.
