Hello!

First I'd like to thank those, who posted their pictures of watches.
This forced me to dig out my unfinished watch project and finish it
(well, almost). Here is my watch, but it is without strap, as this watch
has velcro strap and I haven't found good way to render it (may-be
thanks to M. Ramst's fur macro I can do it).

Model was created mostly in Rhino, textures were hand-adjusted.

The modelling is really good. The golden part (I assume it is golden?) looks
a bit plastic; maybe a higher brilliance value will help. Also, some
background for the metal to reflect... And I have never seen a digital watch
using Times New Roman display ;)
As for velcro, I'm sure you can do it with fur. Doesn't need to be very
detailed fur, either, but you have to make the velcro part a separate obect.

Very nice !

You said that your watch was nearly entirely created with Rhino : Does it mean
that your model is made of smooth_triangles ? In that case I just wonder the
size of the script.
I agree with Margus, the shell looks a bit too plastic : Higher diffuse,
higher brilliance and specularity, lower ambient should do the trick.

As for the strap, you don't have to stick to real life : You could try to
model one made of metal. That's what I should have done with mine, it would
have been much easier and (more important) faster.

Anyway, the spotlightbrings out the watch from the scene and the details are
neatly done.

Well done.

I'd agree with both Margus and Fabien... but I don't ;]
The gold-tone metal looks pretty much like that metal alloy you see
these days, softish quality. If anything you might want to try
bump_mapping those black numbers and marks though. Concave with a bit of
specular highlight, which would require a gray to black (outer gray,
inner black) coloring for the numbers and marks in the image used. Don't
know what your working with there though, seeing it is a Rhino model.
Maybe a relection .1 coupled with reflection_exponent .5 or some such
could make for a good finish on the bezel too. All up to you of course.

Do You mean the size of export files? Apporoximately 20 MB. It takes
quite long to parse, but rendering ain't too slow (51 sec. for parsing,
41 minutes for rendering with AA0.3, without AA it was ~6 minutes, on
300 Mhz PPro). Fortunately Rhino could export objects separately, so I
don't have to mess with big mesh files (yes, they are smooth triangle
meshes), only with main file, where textures, camera and lights are
described.

Actually, I believe, that in order to get more realistic, shell should
be much more... ehm, dull? darker? oxidized?, as I haven't polished my
watch and it got quite ugly. I will try to improve shell, glass needs
more work too.

Thanks, that is what I've expected ;-)
Of course real PovRay snob could just script this watch, but I started
modeling of this watch as learning exercise of Rhino ("Well, it would be
good, if I try to model something, what it could be? Ah, lets take this
watch! Where is my ruler?") and now, after some time I can see that this
model is not as good as it could be, hopefully next model will be
better.

Since you have modelled your watch entirely with rhino you could submit your picture
to the Rhino3d.com gallery when it is finished. There's a collection of
well-modelled watches and yours would fit in very well.

One thing off topic : Most of the time I manage to figure out where people are from
just by their names or email-address, but for you I get stuck. Which country are you
from ?

.ee in the server name means Estonia.

Yes, I have visited Rhino's gallery and I have seen watches, but I
thought, that I don't qualify for the gallery (most of the submitters
are professionals, I'm just hobbist). On the other hand, this idea seems
to be good and I guess that trying won't hurt anyway, so probably I will
post my watch, when I finish it.

With regard to country question: I'm from Estonia, that what .ee stands
for. And as far as I know, my name (Vahur) is old Estonian name, so it
is not easy to figure out from it my nationality.

Just keep me posted when your watch is finished. I'd like to see the result.
No matter what you do for a living, only the quality of the picture counts in the
gallery.

Besides, it's going to give even more credit to this great software we are all using :
POV.

Mais oui! Attends un peu, s'il tu plaises! En cet week-end j'enverrai

French is very bad, though I learn it at present time: I just guess,
that at age 30 I'm too old to learn foreign languages...)

I'm doing dull business apps for living; reason for my criticism was the
fact, that I had just feeling, that my rendering wasn't finished or good
enough for gallery. Last renderings show improvement (I really hope
that they do!) and I hope that in the near future (in this week-end?) I
will be content enough with it and post it in this NG and Rhino's
gallery.

Sure, if I post this watch picture to Rhino's gallery, then I'm proud to
present Pov-Ray as renderer.
