I have an Error/Status message that displays itself everytime I start
POV-Ray (versions 3.1e and now 3.1g).
It says "Could not monitor insert template dir" and the window's title
is "POV-Ray Editor."
I haven't found any options on the menues to address this and no
information in the documentation on the Editor included with POV-Ray.
It rather annoying and I would appreciate any advice/help that anyone
can offer.

It sounds like it is looking for a directory that is added during the
installation of the program. If you let the install wizard do it's thing
you should have a main directory named "POV-Ray for Windows v3.1" and
a sub directory off of this that is named "Insert Menu". If the directory
has been renamed or does not exsist I imagine that is the source of your
problems. It is looking for that directory and the sub directories below
that which contain the information files for the insert menu items.
Note: earlier versions of Pov had a different system for the insert menu
and if you have installed multiple upgrades over each other without doing
a full uninstall first then it may still have the old system still in place.
First time I have heard of this problem though to be honest with you.

I was able to recreate the error message you are recieving by renaming
my Insert Menu directory to something else. After doing so and starting
the program I recieved the same message. Sounds like this is your problem.

I think you're at least partially correct. I renamed the POV-Ray
directory itself during installation (it's an option).
I received the error after installing v3.1e and so before installing
v3.1g I did a complete uninstall first (saving only some custom settings
mentioned in another message by exporting a key from the registry, then
importing it after install). I've had POV-Ray installed in the same directory
though each time.
I'm glad that you were able to recreate the error, but I'm not sure how to
correct it. I'd rather not rename my directory (though I did try renaming it
to match the directory you listed, it caused the INI files not to be found).
If there is a INI file or Registry entry I can change to indicate a directory
I think that would solve it.
I did follow a standard install and made no behind the scenes directory moves
or renaming.
I think I am the only one who has ever experiences this problem.
Thanks for your information, it will help me narrow things down to find a
possible solution. Maybe if I can find what Registry keys need to exist and
get rid of all others, in case some legacy keys are hanging in the Registry,
this would help.

Ken,
I don't think this is the only thing involved. My Insert Menu is called just
that, Insert Menu. It is located in my POV-Ray directory and even though I
get the error message I described when I start POV-Ray, I have access to the
Insert Menu's items under the INSERT menu itself as well as being able to edit
them from that same menu. So in other words, POV-Ray knows where my Insert
Menu is. The error must be caused by something else.

Weeell... you got me now. Maybe try installing another copy into a new directory
to see if the problem persists ?
Chris are you out there...

This message occurs when POV fails to install an event to watch for changes in
the insert menu directory. The error can occur for many different reasons,
but if the insert menu is showing up correctly it's not a case of a bad
directory name, since the same directory name is used both for the function
that fills in the insert menu and for the thread that monitors it.
Jared, is it possible that you're running some kind of antivirus or other
system monitoring software that might have its own notification installed
and is somehow preventing POV from installing one?

I do not run any anti-virus software (while running other things) and I have some
system monitoring software but removed it to test out the things Ken and yourself
have suggested.
I uninstalled and reinstalled POV-Ray about 15 or so times. I tried different
directory names each time.
POV-Ray installs and does not generate the error with some of these names:
C:\Program Files\POV-Ray [full name here],
C:\P\POV-Ray [full name here],
C:\Prog\POV-Ray [full name here], or
C:\aa\POVwin.
It generated the error during running with these names:
C:\POV-Ray [full name here],
C:\Apps\Art\POV-Ray [full name here],
C:\Apps\POV-Ray [full name here]
As a result I chose a directory name I could live with from the results of my
testing. I moved in and set up shop and imported all of my registry settings
and it worked great. This tells me that the error is probably an internal one
to POV-Ray for windows, not the install or the Registry. I simply wanted to
install the program in C:\Apps\Art\POVwin, but it apparently doesn't like that,
so I settled on C:\aa\POVwin.
I tried the above directories with different drive partitions as well, the results
were the same for each partition (I actually used E for my install).
Something that probably should be fixed somewhere in the next update I hope.
Thanks again for your help.
Jared
