Hi,
I've switched to Ubuntu a few weeks ago - and there's a precompiled
POV-Ray package available, but it's version 3.5 (at least it's all
Synaptic is able to find).
Is there a more recent version available for Debian and/or Ubuntu?
This is just an informal question, I know that it's no problem to get
the latest source and compile it, but I'd still prefere packages if they
are available (so I don't have to worry about path and library issues).
I'm just curious.
Thanks,
-sascha

No. The Debian POV-Ray package is apparently unmaintained for quite
some time.

You won't have any 'path and library issues' with either the binary or
source version on Linux systems.

I'll second what Christoph said. I'm running a self-compiled version of 3.6
on Ubuntu. It works fine. No issues at all compiling it. You could always
create your own .deb if you wanted to keep things easy to install/uninstall
the "debian way".

Thanks for the info Christoph!

Yes, thats true. I've never had any problems compiling or running
POV-Ray on any Linux System. I've had a lot of problems with other
applications though (mostly dependency issues), so my preference for
packages is more general in nature, not POV-specific :-)
Anyway, running a self-compiled version isn't a problem at all! Thanks
for your answers.

Thanks, Christoph, for all the work you've done on the Linux version of POV.

I've only been using Linux for a few weeks (and I still need to use Windows
for this stupid modem :) but I had no probs installing the standard POV
binary package on Mepis. A POV Debian package would make things a little
neater, I suppose.

I mostly use Fedora, but I also have and play with a few other
distros... And as you imply, the standard POV binary package installs
and runs fine with Debian 3.1 (Sarge).
Although I have to confess that I just rendered a few of the normal
example scene files simply to verify that it was working.

I actually installed Linux because of POV. I'd read here that it was faster
& stabler than POV under Windows. I was trying to render a scene to a
1024x768 image and it was locking up after every 8 lines or so. After a
dozen or more reboots I gave up. The same scene rendered on Linux without a
hitch.
Almost all of my renders over the last month have been under Linux, using
Kate as the editor. I've got syntax highlighting working, but I do miss
keyword completion & the autolookup of docs that the Windows GUI has. I've
had a quick look at qtpoveditor (or whatever it's called) but I just found
it confusing & I couldn't even work out how to configure it. :(

Since mid-october there's been a new Debian maintainer* for povray.
While he hasn't uploaded new packages on Debian yet, you can find his
first attempts at packaging povray-3.6.x here:
https://svn.diwi.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/packages/povray/?root=debian
Note I haven't tried those packages myself, and the maintainer
says they should be rebuilt (as they are already 7 months old).

My cousin runs (or at least he used to) POV-Ray for Windows under Wine,
just to get the editor working. Rendering was launched from the command
line, since Pov over Wine was, umm, kinda... slow.

The Debian (and therefore Ubuntu) povray package has pvm (or some other
parallelization) patches on it. Because those patches don't work on
anything newer than 3.5 (3.6 had 'radical changes' - uses mpi on local
system to prepare for 3.7 (supports multi-processor machines, a.k.a. SMP,
or shall I say "Dual Core Compatable"? :) and other future versions of
pov-ray) there has been no newer version of povray. (My feeling is that in
retrospect the thing probably should have been released as povray-3.5-pvm
and then there could have been an official povray-3.6 ... package, although
that would mess up the current scheme anyhow.)
In any case, installing 3.6 from the binary tar.gz from the povray.org
website has worked really well for me. ("$ sudo ./install" in the povray
install directory extracted from the tar.gz file)
IIRC, in Ubuntu/Debian 'depends' on the povray package aren't forced by
packages such as KPovModeller and the like and they'll usually autodetect
even a install from the official packages from povray.org once installed.
(Meaning that kpov will run povray from the program, not that synaptic will
find povray.)
