Since I funded the kickstarter at a particular level, turns out that
came with early access at Gamma release. Right on Commanders!

Initial attempt to play was hindered by some bug with the client, but
when I uninstalled that and reinstalled it, everything loaded.

Banged up my tutorial ship pretty good trying to get out of the docking
lesson, couldn't figure out how to request docking permission, restarted
the tutorial. Second try went a bit better, reconfigured a few controls
here and there, got clearance to dock, got inside the station, looked
around fully half a minute before finding my docking bay...

...then spent three minutes bobbling around the landing pad, wondering
why it wasn't picking me up with its docking clamps, then decided to
turn my ship around. APPARENTLY you need to land facing the control tower.

Hi Commander Tim, :-)
The tutorials are somewhat lacking in depth for something so complex. I
never got past #5, the second combat one. It was too difficult for me.
Drop me a PM on the forums (user name SMcA) and I can pass on the little
I have learned. Or just chew the fat.
As for landing, face the tower and keep your ship parallel to the ground
with the gear down. The other thing to look out for is the gangway. It
will always be on the starboard side. Important at the little stations
where you land outside, in the dark.

The choice of controller device(s) also makes a huge difference. If you
can, I'd recommend grabbing some Joystick/Throttle combo plus rudder
pedals (or a joystick with a twisting grip, aka 3D joystick).

See you around the Galaxy!

I've got an SFS Flight Controller, but despite being a nice hefty stick
only has 2 axes and 4 buttons plus 4-direction POV-hat.

Then I got a Saitek ST290 pro at Wal-Mart for like $20, it's got 6
buttons, throttle, z-rotate, and 8-direction POV-hat...but a) the
throttle is part of the joystick's base and b) it's really not
comfortable to use for extended periods.

So far I've evaded inderdiction 4 or 5 times, got a nice 4000+ credit
bounty from one of the hooligans trying to shoot me up, and learned that
a fuel scoop is money well-spent (after having already spent over 8000
cr. on refueling). Have made it to Ross 154, next step is a jaunt over
to Sol to have a look around, then back out to survey random unexplored
stars for some easy money.

I suppose you don't have the full joystick/throttle combo then.

If you like hefty gear (and have some money to spare), I'd personally
recommend Thrustmaster's HOTAS Warthog combo (plus some rudder pedals;
I've heard that CH's pedals are by far the best choice); if ruggedness
is what you want, you'll never want anything else if you've tried them.

Looks like a suitable choice for starters.
Ever thought about trying some kind of dual-joystick setup, using both
the SFS and the ST290?

Sounds like a good start. What ship do you have at your disposal?

Make sure to grab your "Freagle" (the additional free Eagle that AFAIK
all Kickstarter backers get, stationed near the place you started) and
cash it in (or use it of course).

If you enjoy kicking some pirates' butts we might try to meet up some time.

Go tooled up. Sol system is a bit rough. Also don't accept any missions
to Sirius. You need a permit to go there.

Easy money! ;-)

BTW I am a bit disappointed with Earth. There are no lights on the night
side and planet time is out of sync with game time.

Hadn't thought about that, actually. Will see if that works.

> Sounds like a good start. What ship do you have at your disposal?

Backed the kickstarter to the Cobra+1000cr+1000cr-worth-of-goods level,
so I've been using that.

I'll have to go back to my starting system to hawk my Freagle, had been
wondering about it, then noticed it listed in the shipyard. After I was
at a system far enough away that I'd rather push on than go back for the
cash value.

Speaking of pushing on: a) FSD speed limit is 2001 c (I see what they
did there) b) according to an old post on the forum, my attempting to go
to Sol from Alpha Centauri the long way 'round (since I have a permit
for Founders World, not Sol) might not be possible, even if I leave my
ship run for the 18 hours needed. Unless they changed that.

There were some unidentified signal sources when I was Out There that I
didn't bother checking out, might (or might not) be worthwhile.

My commander name is Whitacre.

If there is a wipe for release, remember.

It won't work. :-(
It is exiting SC that puts you in the instance. A couple of times I
missed the exit point and once was only a00 km from the station. When I
went the slow way. The marker was there but not the station. I had to go
into SC then straight back out. Before it appeared.

Mine is Justin Joying-McSelf and I am a scaredy cat. :-)

No, you can't travel between systems in SuperCruise; so if you want to
see Earth in all its glory, you'll have to do plenty of missions for
Federation factions.

Friend request from a certain CMDR Apec V. is on its way.

I've just arrived at good old Lave, btw.
