Hi everyone, here's the latest from the ruins wip.
Unfortunately, this resolution doesn't really do it justice; it was rendered
without aa and scaled down afterwards in the gimp.
I've decided to keep the floor relatively plain, so it's just got rocks strewn
around, a bit of patchy colour and some grass and weeds in the crevices.
There's also grass on all the ledges. I'm pretty pleased with the media - looks
like a hot still afternoon - and there's just enough to see some subtle sunbeams
off the statue.

I'm thinking of adding some more vegetation - I think it'd be nice to put some
bushes, maybe some ivy if I can drive the .obj utility. Also, the final version
will be slightly brighter - the radiosity in this was recursion_limit 1, and
I'll be bumping that up to 2 for the final.
Comments and suggestions welcome!
Some brief stats:

Keeps getting better. Don't know how you are going to top this one (except
maybe a larger render).

Yes, very nice version. Still, I would suggest something for the floor. I
think that the inner courtyard should be sunk a little bit below the surface
of the gallery. And why not suggest some flagstones (with a height_field for
instance) in the building itself? Very dim, just a suggestion. I am sure it
would make a subtle difference, especially at a larger scale. You can get
away now with a featureless floor because the image is small, but with a
larger render, that is going to be a problem.

Quite aside from your beautiful render, your 'photographic composition
technique' is superb. The dark/light areas really draw my eye to the center of
attention. Most folks can't even compose a photo so nicely.

Reminds me "Sponza Atrium" even if it is not.

A great image. Testament to the power and wisdom of KISS.
A technique for weathered blocks, transitions to a contemplation on the
nature of stone for construction, delivered with a lighting and
compositional punch.

Thank you all for the positive comments.

A good suggestion, Thomas. I have implemented a first attempt at what you
describe, attached here. I think it does look better, although that's partly
because I now have more crevices in which to grow the grass! :-)

I haven't tried many very large renders, but I think the grass, stones and
pigments should hold up quite well. I intended them to be extreme foreground
features, as with the columns and bricks. We'll soon see; I'll try a
full-quality full-size render this week.

This really looks outstanding. I might recommend a little less green in the
grass, as dry and arid as the climate looks, but I look forward to a final
rendering either way.

Killer! I like what you did with the sunken floor variant too.
Were I there, I would be half expecting to find myself fighting a basilisk.
