I've still got a long way to go with this one, but I thought I'd post the
WIP and get some feedback. Eventually, I'll make an observation deck in
the forward section, with some seating, tables, and plants. I'll also add
a few different varieties of fighters when I get them made. It needs more
superstructure - a bridge, and some big appendages maybe. Engines and
nacelles will be added at some point. I'm not quite happy with the texture
- it seems too flat but I'm not sure what to do about it. Any comments
would be most welcome.

Yes, I think some larger details would be very helpful, like a large
observation deck or some wing-like things, maybe some turrets or
observation domes. It'd difficult right now to see the actual structure of
the ship. Once the eye figures it out, it is an interesting design, but I
think you might use some colored lights inside the hangars to help
distinguish the different section at the fore of the ship. I think it
needs some mssive, glowing engines of some sort.

As far as the texture, I think the problem is that all of the greebles are
about the same size. Try adding some much larger variations. Perhaps you
shoud add some more variations in the hull of the ship itself, perhaps some
ridges or troughs along the suface.

This is your imagination coming to life of course, so do as you please, but
these are my suggestions to improve the image.

Thanks! I'll keep working on it and try to add some of the features you
mentioned. So far I've mostly been working on some details that weren't
quite right in the first one. Here's my latest, though it looks a bit dark
on the current monitor I'm looking at (not the one I renderd it with).

It still strikes me as funky-looking to have a spaceship obviously not
designed to land in gravity nevertheless having flat decks for parking
runabouts on.

Actually, I think the new lighting is a huge improvement, especially with
the stars in the background and some specular on the texture. The new
fighter is also much better. I'm anxious to see how you continue the
project!

That's exactly what I thought.

Yes, living in a gravity field my entire life has left me with a few biases.
I was thinking that the crew might prefer having an up/down orientation in
their working environment so I included a gravity generator on this
particular ship (a cheaper alternative would have been to just have the
crew wear very heavy boots). However, that's not set in stone - I may
develop some sort of rotary dispenser for the fighters. In fact I think
I'll give that a try and see where it goes for my next version. Thanks for
the feedback!

There is no thecnological explanation for those decks layoout, but a
psychological one:
The flat decks are flat to accomodate the crew, as it can be easier to orient
oneself on such a deck rather than one that fully exploit the weightlessness of
space.

I've added some features and given in to the "anti-gravity" chorus a bit.
Now for some engines/nacells at the aft...

Any other suggestions?

I would go for the heavy boots, like they wear on the ISS (except when they
are on television) :-)
(....and there we go again...)
