If you are re-rendering I will make another suggestion for your
consideration... when you scaled up the picture window you also scaled
up the frame. I think the frame on the open pane is too wide... looks
like about six inches to me, based on the wine bottle, glasses, etc.

Of course you know you've got a good image if this is all people can
find to criticize :-)

So you mean the width of the pane of the open/tilted window? Yeah, it could
be a little smaller and still look endurable enough... I'll check on that as
well. Thanks for pointing it out!

Nice mentioning that. Thank you! :-)

Here's the update with the latest, suggested and important changes: the
chair shouldn't tip over anymore, and the window doesn't look like it's a
vault door. :-) 9.5 hours rendering, cause this time, I rendered at
3200x2400 with antialiasing.

Regards,
Tim

Whoah!

With this really nice scene, did anyone notice something missing on the
floor? (I don't necessarily mean "dust"... although maybe that's
missing...) The outside does not reflect on the floor at all... only its
light reflects.

I presume that the landscape itself is too low (and "far") to reflect in the
floor, so only the sky is reflected... Is that correct, Tim?

Yup, great thinking Thomas, but there's a technical side to it as well.

The landscape is just a photo, which is placed roughly 16 meters away from
the room. It just fits the camera's viewing frustrum. But since it just sits
on a rectangular mesh (made of two triangles), reflections would look
awkward. So it isn't reflected at all, anywhere, using no_reflection. The
viewpoint does allow this, because, like you said, the room is above the
ground, so it would only reflect things above the floor-level, which, in
effect, would only be clouds.

Regards,
Tim

Yes, I discovered the no_reflection in your scene after sending my last
message. So, this is something to be careful about when choosing a photo for
the background. Hmm... perhaps I shall try something else....

Late answer.. nonetheless, I like it very much.
It's got some sort of Vray rendering feeling to it.
And that's not something bad from my point of view.
Maybe it's how the sunlight hits the wooden floor that
gives it that feeling to me.
I really like it. The small details, like the power outlet.

You should show this on CGTalk.com to get their
view too.. IMHO. :)

I did that, and I got exactly ONE reply, and that was: "Photons for the
bottle? Can I see a close-up?"

To be honest, I sometimes think that those folks hanging out at CGTalk are
pretty full of themselves. Instead of giving some constructive criticism,
they *just* critisize or open their mouth to voice stuff like "What? It's
just another short movie, don't know why everybody is gushing about it."

I don't know, but that's not my taste. I either say something like a
compliment, or critisize by hinting at what *I* think could have been
better...

Ah well. To sum it up: I like it better here. :-)

Regards,
Tim

Agreed. They are pretty elitistic.. Atleast some of them.
And, yes, sometimes it's gambling if you will get pointers
or not. But I think if you are lucky sometime you can get
the attention of one of the better artists there and that can
most surely help you delelop both the image and yourself.
As an example, I had some problems when I was taking
my first stumbling steps to learn how the physics worked
in 3ds MAX 7. And luckily enough, one of the really good
guys saw my post and gave me alot of useful helpers and
information. He even sent me a sample scene that I could
disect to help me understand how to set up deflectors,
particle flows and so on.

But I hear you, and I agree. :)
