i've knuckled down the last several days and i'm nearly finished.  i'm
replacing the current fuselage, and i still have the landing gear and
cockpit (maybe- on that last one) to do, but as you can see, the
textures are about there.  the fuselage in this pic is the old one (as
is the nose) and has to be two copies of a solid mesh, cut in half, with
different inside_vector statments.  not pretty.  it was made in spatch
as is the remake.  the remake breaks it up into three seamless
sections.  the nose will be brought in as a patch and has the cutout
already in it.  the middle section has the cockpit cutout as well as the
landing gear bay, and the rear has the wing hole, the top and rear
detail cutouts, and the cargo hatch.  those last two sections will be
solid meshes.  all textures are procedural including the squad
striping.  when i finish, i'll clean everything up and post both moray
and pov versions of the source.

on more thing... does anyone have pictures or blueprints or the like of
the inside of the cockpit?  i'd like to make two versions, one as seen
from outside (low detail) and one as seen from inside (high detail).  if
i can't find pics, then i'm just going to do the low detail version and
move on to something else (like animations).

I was going to mention that if you hadn't.
The texture, overall, just seems too dull to me.  Has the look of being in a
dimly lit hanger or something I guess it is.  Should the lighter parts be
brighter, more reflective, specular, or whatever?  The red painted part is
likewise.  I'm just going by memory of the movies, I realize these tended to
be weather-worn and they were also in various states of cleanliness too I
believe.  I'm just saying this looks coated in dust, as is.  Wait, that's what
I'm trying to say, it looks to have been stored away for several years.
You have a great project going there, hope you make time for some play too.

try getting some screen shots from star wars, then making your own, i did
have some cockpit stickers with my toy x-wing, but alas that is gone into
the hands of a grubby (and somewhat tubby) collector.

Great modelling. It needs one more thing to make the texture complete, IMO.
It needs to have big, dark burn marks where circuitry has shorted out from
time-to-time.

the ships don't have any metallic shininess or anything.  they actually
have a lot of "dirt" or whatever all over them.  i'm not so sure it
would be realistic (the air force washes planes right?) but that's how
they were in the movies.  i actually need to add some darker stains as
well.  the models i based my textures on look almost exactly the same as
my image, while another model i have pictures of looks to have been
given liberal sprays of matte black spray paint and is quite dark
overall.  i like the lighter color.  perhaps i should post a comparison
pic next time.

you'll see in previous posts that i used the last model produced and
dial calipers accurate to the hundreth of an inch (guessing the
thousandths) as the main source.  i also have about 30 pictures gleened
off the web including some a guy took at the smithsonian.  and last but
not least, i used some books i have and my brother's cd rom.  there were
about a dozen models used in production of the films and no two are
alike.  i therefore had to make judgments as to what i liked the best. 
i also compared the movies on vhs.  overall i tried to make things match
the full size version the actors sat in.  there are over 1100 objects in
the model.  i would have to say that i used the videos the most.
