Well here's my boosters in action, launching my spaceship into the sky! This
will be the start of my irtc animation (unless I get time to animate a
prologue), and will be followed by the ship appearing in lots of different
and interesting looking places. This may actually be the final render of
this scene, because there's not much I want to add to it.

I know it's a small detail, but I really like the clouds in this. I added
them tonight as an afterthought. They're just a spotted pigment with an
interesting turbulence pattern, but they're one of the rare cases where the
effect looks exactly how it did in my head! The source for this pigment is
available if anyone wants it.

So, what do you think? Comments and suggestions are really welcome at this
stage, because I'm soon going to start the final renders of all the
different scenes, so this is the last chance I get to tweak things!

Wow. Beautiful and excellent animation. I love the tranporter(?) effect. To
me, the scale of the craft is much more evident in this scene.

The only problem I see is the cloud touching the horizon after the camera
pans back down to the grandstands. (Why do you pan back down? Not much
happening there.)

The scene is excellent as is. If you spend any more time on it, the distant
city seems plain, and maybe the ground should be a different color (brown?)
past the grandstands and to the horizon.

The clouds look great, perhaps some of them are a bit long/wide, but
it's not that important. I'd love to see the source for them btw!
A bit more details on the buildings in the background would be nice..
Perhaps make them a bit bigger? The building to the left looks great,
what are the purpose of the buildings to the right?
I'd like a bit more interesting horizon, perhaps some mountains, or if
you're short on time just a simple ground fog to wash out the horizon
line?

Looking forward to the final animation, the ship movement and warp looks
awesome!

-Peter

You need to zoom to the ship as it warps, or perhaps cover the event from
several camera angles

the stands in the bg look odd, and the overall scene is a bit to open - nice
clouds :)

Well the pan back down is to get the timing right for the next shot. I want
you to see the ship vanish and have a few seconds to take it in, before we
cut to where the ship arrives. Though it's one of the things I might edit
out when I put the final animation together.

I agree about the cloud touching the horizon, I think I might put a little
ground fog, some mountains, and some more interesting textures in the
background, but I'll do that later on 'cause I have a lot of other scenes to
finish!

Thanks for the suggestions.

The buildings to the right are grandstands full of people. I'll make that
more obvious if I get time to animate a few establishing shots.

I agree that the horizon's a bit dull. I'll re-work it after I finish some
of the other scenes (if I have time).

The source for the clouds and sky is just this:

sky_sphere {
 //sky gradient
 pigment {
  function { min(max(y,0),1) }
  scale 1.01
  translate -.01*y
  turbulence .02 lambda 3 omega .8
  poly_wave 1/8
  colour_map {
   [0 rgb <4,2,1> ]
   [1 rgb <1,2,3>/5 ]
  }
 }
 //lit bits of clouds
 pigment {
   spotted
   scale <1,.1,1>/2
   scale 30
   warp {
     turbulence .5
     octaves 2
     lambda 4
     omega .5
   }
   scale 1/30
   colour_map {
     [.65 rgb 1.5 transmit 1]
     [.75 rgb 1.5 transmit 0]
   }
 }
 //shadowed bits of clouds
 pigment {
   spotted
   scale <1,.1,1>/2
   scale 30
   warp {
     turbulence .5
     octaves 2
     lambda 4
     omega .5
   }
   scale 1/30
   translate -y*.01
   colour_map {
     [.65 rgb .6 transmit 1]
     [.75 rgb .6 transmit 0]
   }
 }
}

Zooming on the ship's a good idea. I hadn't thought of that!

The scene was originally meant to be quite stylised, though I think you're
right that it looks a bit empty. I'll put a few more details in at some
point.

Thanks :)

Nice!

  One thing I would change ... I'd move the stands to somewhere other than
behind the ship. I wouldn't want to sit in those bleachers and face RIGHT
into the exhaust.

  I'd put the bleachers on the left side (i.e. rotate counter clockwise by
90).

  The clouds are very nice - although as someone noted, one of them is right
on the horizon but I didn't notice that at first. If there are buildings on
the horizon then clouds do look like they touch sometimes (i.e. you rarely
can see right to the sky/ground edge in real life).

 I also agree that it looks a bit empty - the downtown is OK although a bit
plain (windows maybe), but the big issue is that there isn't any other
detail visible in the city. Maybe you could 'elevate' the forground
slightly - if it looks elevated, then you wouldn't look for the rest of the
city.

Well they're actually further away than they look, I'll probably cut in some
shots from different angles for the final piece so you can see there's
nobody getting cooked! BTW, why do you call them "bleachers"? I've not heard
that phrase before.

I like the idea of elevating the foreground, that could work really well and
will save me the trouble of needing to add detail to the background.

Thanks for the suggestions
