OK, bare with me, I'm having a dumb moment here...

I notice that a number of images posted to this news server feature human
figures. (And/or evidence of sharp blades ;-) No one else seems suprised at
this, but every time *I* see an image like this, I just have to wonder....
How the hell do you make a human figure out of spheres and cylinders?!? Have
I missed something!?! Surely the human form is far too complex to recreate
this way... And yet, here are the images to prove it. As I said, no one else
seems suprised, so I'm obviously missing something critically significant
here...

Andrew.

There is a commercial program called Poser which is designed specifically
for the purpose of creating human forms. The 3D format that it produces
can be exported and converted (using 3rd party software) to POV-Ray meshes
and then used in POV-Ray scenes.

You don't (well, you can, and then there is blobman).

Human figures in general are meshes - basically a load of very small triangles
stiched together and an image-map applied to them. The figures are modelled
using Poser (version 3 is given away regularily on CG mags cover disks), and
then converted to mesh format using 3dWin.

Just to give you an idea of the number of triangles involved, a typical poser
mesh is 4mb.

Oh right... Triangle meshes eh? So I take it POV-Ray does some kinda magic
trick to smooth out the edges and make the shapes look "rounded" when in
fact they are made of flat triangles? (I think I remember seeing something
vaguely like that in the docs somewhere...)

So where do they get the mesh data from? Is someone awesomely talented
enough to model a human being out of triangles by hand, or do they get it
from medical imaging scans or something? (Presumably Poser doesn't magic
data out of thin air ;-)

Andrew.

Yep, the normals of the triangles are adjusted to "curve" the them. That said,
we are talking about a lot of very small triangles.

Well, I don't know what the original source of the poser figures is - scanning?
modelling? other? - but basically poser allows you to position the limbs on a
figure, using either the mouse or a series of sliders. You can see the changes
take place in real-time in front of you, and I-K is used to constrain the
movements to a reasonable approx. of reality.

Where are you Andrew? If you're interested, I can send you a copy of a magazine
distrib. for Poser 3.

Sorry, there is no magic involved. The poser contribution includes some meshes
for humans and animals. And the triangle edges ARE visible (at least in close
up views). And there are also some 3rd party companies like DAZ3d and they
sell high polygon figures like the famous Vicky and Michael.
But even with them I usually do a surface subdivision for some regions by using
wings3d to get a smooth look.

Of course Cezanne said everything in nature could be reduced to the cone,
cylinder, and sphere. I assume that would include humans!

Fully-functional afaik. If you're interested, drop me an email at:
tom### [at] tomandlucouk - it's a fairly large package, but if your connection speed
is up to it, I can place it online for you, or send you a CD. Normal conditions
apply, no commercial use, etc.

I'd be definitely HIGHLY interested in downloading a copy of the freely
released Poser 4. It's been ages I've wanted to give it a try.
