why does povray render SLOWER on a ram drive?

What are you using the RAM disk for? To store the POV program, includes,
scene file, output image, or what?
It might be slower because there is less RAM for the actual running
program, is it using VM?

no it's a windows ramdrive and the ramdrive holdes all the components of
rendering from the program to the output and there is still 110MB of other
ram free for the rendering

I'm curious, have you tried to put the virtual memory swap file into
that ram drive as well?
This problem makes me think computer memory may be fairly ineffecient
for the task of jumping in and out to the CPU. More likely it is too
fast to keep up good enough, have you got error correction ram?
I'm just interested because I used to use RAM drives way back in my
old DOS days and often thought of doing the same as you.

Excuse my rudeness, but this is as dumb as putting some of
the gasoline of your car into the trunk (that's where you
put the luggage, I think..) instead of the tank
to try and get the car lighter (less heavy).

On the same humorous note, I read a story in the online news headlines
whereby some people who likely neglected to pay their heating utility bill,
were trying to heat their home by warming gasoline in a container on the
kitchen stove. Needless to say, the fire department had to put out a raging
fire in their kitchen. Hopefully, these people are unable to have children
:)

It was only a question, sheesh. And hey, I used a propane b-b-q grill
to heat my mobile home several winters ago when the power failed for a
long while and I couldn't get out of my driveway. So maybe I am one of
those people ;) However I did keep some ventilation going in the
meantime.
Needless to say I immediately got a kerosene heating unit. Now is that
smart? If you experienced the foul smelling fumes and troubles from
one of those things you might guess not again.
I'm still curious, what would virtual memory do in a RAM drive then,
anyone know? Start using the disk drive as RAM? Oops, it already does
that (half in jest here).

If this is possible I don't think there is anything to be gained by doing
so. If a swap file is created then POV-Ray needs more RAM. I'd just let
Windows manage the swap file. Better yet, if POV-Ray parses a scene that
uses up conventional RAM and starts hitting the swap file, get more RAM as
long as one's wallet holds out.
I used to create RAM drives in DOS, also, Bob. It would often work
beautifully and noticeably faster, too. I am only talking about tiny
applications running in a total of 640k RAM on an old 8088, though.

I've seen Windows put the disk cache into virtual memory a few times!
