Before rendering to an .AVI file, I play with the animation slider to
get an idea on how will be the final result. I think it would be great a
"PLAY" button that moves the slider smoothly.

Thanks for your time, Xander.

I assume you mean something other than just holding down the right arrow
key.

Lutz brought up almost the exact same thing. I'm thinking that one way
to do it would be to keep track of a timer and update all the objects on
a regular basis.

Would it be best to match the update rate to the selected frame rate of
the animation? Clearly there will be dropouts for complex scenes, but
you would get a general idea of how it looks (Moray does a pretty good
job of drawing lines in random order, giving a feel for where everything
is located).

I'd like to be able to 'scale' an animation, i. e. to change the frame
rate without changing the actual length of the animation. This would of
course result in a loss of accuracy when reducing the FPS, but it could
still be good for rendering just a quick preview (well, you can do this
with the Wireframe or Scanline modes, but this isn't useful for every
animation).

Do you think it would be enough (at least to start) to have a selection
of ...x1/4, x1/2, x1, x2, x4 ... Or do you want to be able to say just
how many frames total?

In the long term it would be much better to change to having selections
of both frames and duration (time). If you specify time, then you could
just change FPS to get a coarser animation.

There's plenty of work that can be done in the timeline department.

Just another opinion here, but:

Either way is fine, I can do the math- whichever is easiest for you for
now as it sounds like you'll add both later, and believe me BOTH would
be VERY handy to have as when I time things my mind sometimes works on
an absolute scale where I know exactly how many frames something runs
at, and other times I know relatively how many I need to see from a
scratch-off to get a true indication of the action.

Hehe... been there but- never did it (lack of programming skills to take
it that far), deferring to you.

The frames in total, please. First, it's exactly what Povray does and
I'm used to this, and then, it's not enough to just double. (I don't see
why this should be much more work - just another linear interpolation.)

That's a good idea! If you did this, I'd certainly use time (I was even
using the clock as time, counting one clock unit as one second).
