I was wondering what the rendering time of some more complicated scenes
would be. Then I realized, "what is complicated?" So my question to you now
is; what is the max rendering time some of you have encountered? I know it
depends on the system specs so here are the specs of my laptop...

Intel Pentium III Processor
498 MHz
256 MB of RAM

ATI Rage Mobility: Dell

These, along with the OS used (Win2000, WinNT, WinXP, Linux Distro) are the
important parts for comparison.

This isn't, as POV-Ray doesn't use the any hardware except the CPU on your
motherboard to calculate the image.

I have a Athlon XP+ 2.400 with 768 MB DDR-RAM running on Win2000, and the
longest render I've had so far with this setting was "A Rose" (Link:
http://www.nolights.de/past_pros/rose/rose.html), which required 1d2h52m
tracing time. On a 1.4Ghz Athlon with 512 MB RAM on Win2000 my "Gerberas"
(Link: http://www.nolights.de/past_pros/gerbera/gerbera.html) took around 2
days, but it's a lot faster now (of course).

Animations may also take up to a few days, e.g. my LSSM (liquid surface
simulation macros) required a few days for some of the examples seen on my
webpage.

Cause I can't wait several hours to just check upon one or two components of
an image, my rendering times never exceeded this two-day render for the
final version, otherwise, I could easily create images which require much
longer (and would also need it, I'm not talking about cranking
mesh-resolutions to levels beyond reason).

I shy away from 0 PPS scenes. I think the longest render I've done was about
6 hours. It had an area light inside each of 4 glass globes, which were
filled with media. then add a sphere sweep and radiosity. it's not complex
really. i removed the sphere_sweep and just used lots of spheres placed
closely on a spline. search for "ross lamp" through the web interface and
you'll find a progression of images. (see i told you it's not complex ;)

to get a comparison to other peoples speeds, try running the benchmark as
described here: http://www.povray.org/download/benchmark.php

My computer info:
AMD Duron 800MHz
128MB RAM
running Slackware 9.1. X was running, as was Enlightenment, as would be my
normal situation while
using povray.

3.6:
Parse Time: 0 hours 0 minutes 4 seconds
Photon Time: 0 hours 1 minutes 54 seconds
Render Time: 1 hours 30 minutes 34 seconds
Total Time: 1 hours 32 minutes 32 seconds


also, maybe check the IRTC (http://www.irtc.org) images. I think people that
use POV-Ray for it usually say how long it took to render. For instance, the
3rd place for Sept-Oct used POV and took about 13 hours to render on a 1.1
GHz Athlon.

My longest... I think is 'Rainbow Bridge' made for IRTC.

RENDER TIME:
  Parse: 4 sec.
  Trace: 12 hour 35 min. 51 sec.

HARDWARE USED:
Anthon 1.2Ghz 128 Meg RAM

It used focal blur, an isosurface and radiosity. All can slow down 
rendering times. When I rendered it I let it run over night. In the 
morning it just like Christmas. I couldn't wait to see what I got.

My longest one up till now was an experiment including Chris' hair 
macros and radiosity... Took about 28 hours on my Athlon XP 2600+, 1 Gig 
RAM.

I guess I'll never beat Gilles, though:

	A large part of the year was dedicated to the 6-month rendering
	of the "Cubicle workers".

My longest was 5 days 9 hrs on a P4 1.8gz (1280x1024).  And the scene 
wasn't all that complex, but when I added radiosity & focal blur the 
render time jumped 25x, and that was with medium quality settings. I 
have never really finished the scene because unless I get another 
machine to render on it simply isn't practical.

I tend to find ways to push my render times up to ridiculous levels even
with simple scenes!  The longest thing I've traced has taken over two days
for 1024x768.  However, I had to remove the focal blur and redo the
radiosity lighting in that scene because it was going to take three weeks.

Hello,

i'm pretty new to povray and except some questions that i still can answer
myself with reading the docs ;) i'd like to know some things about the
experience you made with rendering times.

When i got into pov deep enough i would like to generate big pics.
so does the rendering time increase linear to pic-size?
have any of you rendered a pic with a sice of about 8000x12000 pixels?
and if so, how long did it take to render the scene? (i know it depends on
hardware but anyway)

I've rendered several 3200x2400 and 2400x3200 images. The rendering times
vary between a few hours and a few days (longest ever so far was 3.5 days,
I've got 2.4GHz Athlon XP with 768 MB RAM on Win2000). Generally, you can
just multiply your rendering time on a decent sized image (e.g. 800x600)
with the new resolution, but remember that total pixels quadruple when you
double the resolution!

But that's really a very rough estimate, there are many factors that go into
this. Generally, don't go for a large render until you've optimized the hell
out of the scene, and even then, be sure you need the resolution and can't
do with anything slightly smaller.
