Now see, that's what I'm talking about. Rather than say "what you think
is a flamewar doesn't compare to some I've seen" you insult my intelligence
and/or education instead. Thanks for the example, though.

>Pointing out that someone may have said something the writer considers
>stupid is not a flame war. Two or more people slamming each other with every

There's a huge difference between saying "what you are saying is stupid, and
here's why" and "you are stupid and/or a liar because you refuse to agree
with me or I've chosen to ignore what you said in favor of what I wish you'd
said."

One is rational discussion. The other is mindless flaming. Just because
nobody in off-topic was particularly creative with their flames doesn't make
them not flames.

Your interpretation of my statement is more insulting than any
reasonable interpetation can possibly imply. -That- is how people get their
feelings out of joint, making up insults where none exist. I repeat, if you
need to see what flame wars -really- are, and what a -real- insult is like,
let me know. If you have to squeeze an insult out of what I said, you might
be surprised what is available. BTW, calling my statement an insult to your
intelligence means you have answered the question of "-if- you need to learn
the difference" in the positive, then got insulted by the results
of -your-own- answer. You might want to practice up before you go looking
for some flamewars.

> nobody in off-topic was particularly creative

See? I can squeeze an insult out of your statements too... Next lesson,
what happens when you don't try to get the last word with someone who
insists on being insulted by every imaginary slight.

Well, Ken, since you seem to be implying that p.g. is not the proper
place for this -on-topic- discussion... which group -is- the proper place
for discussion of the news.povray.org policies and events?

Wait a minute, I think something finally clicked, was your earlier post
an implicit -threat- of what might happen (or not happen) if we -dared- to
discuss this -on-topic- subject at all, in opposition to your orders?

I should learn my place and just shut up when you order me to, but I
guess I am just not the goose-stepping type. I don't respond as expected to
threats either. Why don't you just ban me if you don't like what I say? Or
perhaps just shut down the p.g. group...

This is not an on-topic discussion. This group is about

    povray.general -- General discussions about POV-Ray

It may be unfortunate that there is no group for discussing policies of
this news server, but since the server is private property, the owner
doesn't have to discuss his policies.

> I should learn my place and just shut up when you order me to,

Yes, you should. If I were a guest at your house and you ordered me to
shut up or leave for any reason (because I was insulting your other
guests, was discussing inappropriate (in your opinion) subjects or
simply saying something you didn't like) I certainly would comply.

I may not agree with the decision to shut down pot, but this is not my
server, so I won't debate the right of the owner to run his server as he
pleases (I certainly wouldn't want anyone else to tell me how to run my
server). If you want a server with different policies, run your own.

Very well said.

But this is not Ken's house, I was not insulting anyone and I asked
legitimate questions and made reasonable comments about the subject of "what
happened to off-topic", ie: the subject at hand.

If you told me to shut up in a business, perhaps a restaurant,
that -someone-else- owned, someone who had -not- asked me to stop asking
simple questions about the restaurant, I would respond as I do to any other
mouthy, bossy, sanctimonious, intrusive customer or employee.

Ken, as well as other TAG members -- Chris Huff, Chris Colefax, Warp,
Margus Ramst and myself, have been granted full permission from the
server admin to act on his behalf "in regards to its administration,
and in terms of enforcement and interpretation of the news server
Acceptable Use Policy." Or do you not read the announcements group?

It is rarely the owner's business to deal with drunk people, fights,
shootings or whatever. There are people who take care of such
situations and do so with the owner's authorisation. I doubt you will
protest if the security in the Sheraton restaurant warns you if you
start breaking things and tilting tables.
