Well, I'm currently working on restarting twysted.net

After problems with webservers, work, and other fun stuff, I'm gonna give it
a whirl again.

some of the thoughts I'm working on are thus:

1) Use Macromedia Flash 3/4
    - there are reasons for this:
        - almost universal in scope (I know of linux, Mac, and windows
versions)
        - free CGI app that can change flash files dynamically
(www.swift-tools.com)
        - Small size and bandwidth.
        - Removes screen size limits, as it scales auto-magically.

2) Customizability.
-I'd like to make it somewhat like slashdot in terms of a sidebar that
you can customize to whatever you like. This means a free membership kind of
thing.

3) Content
    - Well, I'd like to get more content than I had before. I'd like to have
such things as:
            - Monthly/Weekly reviews (for more than just win/dos)
            - Tutorials (More than just links - actual tutorials written by
me or someone on the twysted.net staff (See below for this) )
            - Macros, Includes, Objects, Patches, Textures, etc. in a less
fragmented fashion.
            - links galore. (Like I'll ever catch up to Ken.... )
            - User submitted gallery - with web submission and possibly a
user-voted Hall of Fame..

4) Staff
    - To do much of this, I need staff. I need people willing to write
reviews for software ( I only have access to Win and Dos, really) , people
to write articles and tutorials, etc. Sadly, there isn't that much I can
offer as incentive for this. I can give you a fancy twysted.net email addy,
a twysted.net subdomain, etc. Not a whole lot, as I don't make money doing
this.

5) Advertising
    - I may have to put (shudder) banners on the page, to help pay for some
of it. ones I am looking at are: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. I plan on
trying to keep it topical to raytracing, or at least graphics.

6) Separation of the files and the rest of the site
    - I'm setting up files.twysted.net as a simple file storage, on a slower
server, in order to keep my bandwidth down (4 Gigs a month comes to a HEFTY
bill. )

Thoughts? Comments? Offers for help?

Hello Twyst!
I have a macro collection you might want to put up, it contains a spark
macro, useful geometric macros(round box, round cone, round cylinder,
spirals, various mesh generators), a plant macro, and some macros for
true area lights, etc. If you give me a place to put it, I will make
both Mac and PC versions of the text files.

Also, I just found a POV-Ray Mac tutorial that I had started, but gave
up on. I could try to get that started again, and get something
accomplished there.
I could also write up a short thing on making patches, but it would be
better if someone more experienced would do that.

Comments:

YIIPPPIIIEEEE, twyst is coming back.
Uarghhh, probably not for me :-((((
I just tried to view something on macromedias site, no go for Solaris.

I would recommend going for customizing one of the many solutions based
on php3. I think both freshmeat and slashdot use it. There are a lot of
solutions there already, some of them with connection to mysql. I saw
your apache logo often enough lately, so those solutions should go for
you.
Check out freshmeat, I see anouncements of a lot of things with
php/mysql every now and then.

Advertise for O'Reilly. They rule. (damn, I get not a penny for that
one.)

I would be glad to donate some links to the cause :)

Just yesterday I finished a 3 day marathon link verification session to
ensure every link in my collection is currently active and accessable. I
just counted and there 724 active links which means I personaly visited
as many sites in three days. Get em' while there hot !

I have a texture tutorial in the works and I heard Grim Dude mention
that he has one also in the works though I cannot speak for him personaly.
When complete you can host mine for what it is worth.

> Offers for help?

I might be able to contribute other items of interest from time to time
though what that will be is clearly unknown. I am resourceful if nothing
else.

> Thoughts?

I am not too hot on macromedia flash but that's your call. I prefer simple
and effeceint as opposed to flashy and slow. Java's a pain too.

Get to work !

Yay! It was always the best resource!

Personally, I'd rather see content over flash and customisability. They would be
nice, but people go to the site for information, not fancy web features. I'm
afraid that more bells and whistles will mean fewer updates...

> 4) Staff

Hrm.. maybe with a staf you can find time to fit in botht he content and the
fancy stuff...

Is your updating of www.povray.org still in progress?

Loved the site! Can't wait till we get to see the new one!

I wouldn't mind doing some tutorial work, I've made a lot of POV
mistakes and feel I could pass some of the info on to help new
users. My work isn't all that advanced, but I do persist with
problems untill I find a solution.

A twysted email address would be nice.

The main, and only reason I visited your site so many times was INFORMATION.

The tutorials, examples, source code, includes, objects, textures.....all
wonderful!

I thought the tiny fonts you used stunk. I could not read them on either of my
browsers. Give up on the typography and stick with what you do so very, very
well.

Sorry for the off topic intrusion.

Suuuuure... it's there alright.. Installed the plugin, now crashes every
time I access a macromedia made page. Sorrry, Don't like it.

Still... I prefer text-only pages.
> - Removes screen size limits, as it scales auto-magically.
Yes... still..... Just make a frame 640x480 and use that at all times?
Or do as Ozone has... one VERY big page, and using only a part of it in
DHTML. (www.ozones.com, really nifty, yet.... :)

Yes... Hm, CGI and database.. php3 probably then...

This is the important part IMO. its here the work should go.

hey, happy to aid when I can tear myself from apathy for long enough to
do something.. sadly enough, that's not often nowadays..

Banners can be survived, popupwindows CANNOT.
