I was just tossing around ideas in my head this morning while getting
ready for school, and this one came up. Why not make a discussion group
called povray.teens for all of those who are less old than most of you.
If Lance's survey brings up enough of us, perhaps we can talk of our
problems, our growing up with pov, and post our own images, sort of like
a text and binaries group in one. So, what do you think? Is there a big
enough group of teens to fill a group?

Just to throw in my own handful of coins er opinions - When I was a teen,
yes I remember that far back, I found it a joy whenever I had the opportunity
to associate with "adults" an a fairly even level such as the opportunity
that presents itself here. I always found that despite their sometimes grumpy
demeanour and seemingly short and uninformative or not understandable replies
there is much to be learned from the experience of them old farts you are now
looking to exclude yourself(s) from. I also found them to be in most cases
more than tolerant of obviously juvenile comments and that over eager high
energy level that is the trademark of youth. You run into the occasional bear
but you will find in most cases the old farts will go out of their way to help
the young when given the chance even to a greater extint than those of your own
age group will.
While it is of course your choice (and the newsgroup administrator)I don't
feel the benefits out weigh the advantages of using the current group structure
available to you
now. Additionally I am still young at heart and I cannot
guarantee that I will stay out of the kiddies group if I see something I feel
like commenting on or getting involved with. That is a fair warning I think.

Good luck in whatever path you choose to follow.

Hmm, interesting thoughts there...

While I feel that it would be a GREAT idea (I'll emphasise that again,
***GREAT*** idea) to have a certain extent of exclusion to discuss our
POV-Ray thoughts/problems/suggestions in a manner that would be more
accepted (i.e. in our own age group slang etc), I feel that perhaps the 30
or so of us here may not be enough to persuade the admins to create a group
specifically for us :-(

(hey Admins, I'm not saying don't do it, just saying it would be a shame if
you didn't... So I'm really saying, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give us our own
group!!! :-)

Also, since the Survey is closing today, all of those POV-Teens out there
that haven't gotten off their butts and filled it in should do so NOW!!! So
far our youngest member(s) haven't filled it in yet and I feel that it's a
shame to see them not included...

The address once again is:

http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/parallax/359/pov_survey.html

Personally I think that the teens in the POV-Ray community would benefit
greatly from this kind of a newsgroup because we would be getting advice and
suggestions from a group of people that we can relate to well.

Thanks and I hope we get povray.teens going!!! :)

While I am no longer a teen(I'm 29) I did fill out the survey, and
<BR>I think I should mention that I couldn't get the site opened the first
<BR>and second time I tried, but I went back later and well....third times
<BR>a charm. Maybe they are having trouble? It seems to work for me
<BR>now without a hitch.

When I originally posted the survey onto FortuneCity the server went down
for 2 days... great timing eh?

When I went to the site yesterday to add my stats I took a quick look
around afterward. Upon trying to access the site map page I encountered
two Java script error messages. Lines 30 and 31 if I recall correctly
something to do with light up light down functions. I tried to submit
a report about the problem to you via the official response form but
that function wouldn't work returning a server not responding message
or some dad burn message that meant it was broke and somebody needs to
fix it kind of thing. I gave up on the rest of the site after that last
fiasco and went home instead.

Oh, shame I'm on such a useless and unreliable server eh? Well, I checked
the JavaScript and everything seems fine, but I decided that soon I'm going
to eliminate the JS on the page anyway because it's too damn hard to
maintain!!! (i.e. Update one link and you've got to change 50 damn
lines!!!). A lot of people running Netscape have problems with the JS I
write, so obviously there are some incompatibilities... The problem you
encountered with the feedback page was caused by the FortuneCity server...
that's it, I'm switching to CGI For Me's CGI from now on, I'm sick of being
messed around by FC...

I just tried submitting and it worked, so obviously it's something that just
unreliable! DAMN!

BTW I'm redesigning the site from scratch next month (if I get the time) so
there won't be any more of these problems!

I see your point. I wouldn't want to be separated from the kind mentors which have
helped me grow.
There would be an innevitable crossposting also, wouldn't there? Maybe we could just
label some
posts [Just for Teens] to speak privately.

Hmm, I don't think that would work... I really can't see the problem with
having a separate group... I don't think there would be a need for
cross-posting personally... if we feel the need to share something with the
rest of the community, we can always post the question to povray.general, or
a more specific group...

Point of order:
Privacy is not normally what one seeks when posting messages on an open
forum like the Pov-Ray news groups or on any of the usenet groups for that
matter.

Besides as my ole grand pappy used to say "children should be seen and not
heard" this is of course unless the noise they are making is related to the
chores the have to do before the get fed. You kids are pretty lucky you have
as much available as you do. When I was a kid a calculator was either your
toes, a slide rule, or an abacus. The first electric calculators came out
about the time I entered high school and ran off 4 9V batteries, had 6 digit
red LED displays, and took longer to calculate square roots than it does to
download a 200k .3ds mesh file off the net in on an average speed modem.
Prices for those early calculators was about the equivalent of purchasing
a medium priced/quality motherboard today and a whole lot less reliable.

If you youngin's don't get your own group you could start your own super
thread here in .general. Most people head for the bottom of the list when
looking for new messages to read and if you bury yourselves deep enough
even some of the die hards might start ignoring your activities after
awhile. There are some of the lesser used subject groups here that you
might try to invade and take over as your own. How much flak you might
catch for that is an uncertain variable I wouldn't like to have to predict.
