here is a detail of the first - capriccio - approach.
In fact the last addition of Gena at the famous capriccio scene - the
alpha-mapped people at St. Paul's - were the reason to think of another
solution.
It's a pity, that Gena Obukhov's website is down since a long time - if anybody
wants, i'll post the correspondent capriccio scene files. Since they were
published a long time, there should'nt be a problem...

Just two words about your renders (as well as those of Gena, whose works
I wasn't aware of before):
*HOLY*

It's my fault, I assumed everybody knows the "most important povray group
project" so far...
Gena started the project 11 years before
(http://news.povray.org/povray.general/thread/%3C3E814BA5.6C535F62%40mail.com%3E/)
and it came to an successful end (I admire his endurance to coordinate more than
five nonprofs) (http://hof.povray.org/capriccio.html).
Since you wasn't aware of the capriccio scene - I'll publish the scene code.
As a sidekick - the result drove me into the damned "gamma 2.2" camp...
Norbert ;-)

I love this one even more. Impressive results indeed and very
interesting alternatives to 'simple' post-processing.

Many thanks Thomas,
by the way I'm becoming a bit bored with my materials project and want to
publish a "600 materials" update.
Beside more materials I concentrated on postprocessing methods (including some
experiments with reduced color palettes), volume effects, isosurfaces from csg
and so on.
When it's polished, I can send it to you, if you want - since you mentioned a
similar approach from your side.

Misunderstanding here: I did know about that capriccio scene; but that
post-processing thread you linked to is also Gena's work.

Tsk, tsk...
But seriously, when dealing with such an elaborate scene, staying with
the legacy 2.2 gamma is perfectly legit. After all, that's why
"assumed_gamma" is still there.

That sounds interesting indeed! I am not that well structured myself and
certainly do not have a consistent approach.

Meanwhile I did render Capriccio with method 2 and "vertraeumter Fluss" (sorry
for not translating it...) with method 1.
All files to rerender the Capriccio scene and modifications are posted in
povray.binaries.scene-files
(http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.scene-files/thread/%3Cweb.542d8060714e7e245f44f3a00%40news.povray.org%3E/).
I also (re)posted the original Capriccio scene files from 2003
(http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.scene-files/thread/%3Cweb.542d85973c52af1d5f44f3a00%40news.povray.org%3E/).
To my slight surprise method 2 works good in both scenes, despite some artefacts
related to using a heightfield with (only) 16 bit depth. A heightfield with 24
bit depth would be perfect.
But judge for yourself.
First here is the Capriccio scene modified with method 2.

Here is an image, which shows what I mean with artefacts related to be dependent
on 16 bit depth heightfields.
At least there aren't such artefacts with method 1.

Here is my "vertraeumter Fluss" modified with method 1.
Result is even worse than suggested before.
