Hi
I've played with POV and clock and sin() and cos()
I've seen animation tutorials but none tell me how to take the net
step....

I have *hundreds* of images (all .bmp for now...) that I need to join up
to form
an animation.

An .fli, an .avi, an .mpg - I don't care - so long as I can play it back
on my NT 4.0 system ;)
Ideally, I'd like a decent quality animation to wow the cats (they're
hard to impress you know!!) and a way of generating animated gifs for
the www.

Now I've seen references to
cmpeg. DTA and mainactor (which may download sometime tonight ;)
but how do people normally do this stuff?
- and *much* more imprtantly where can I download from?
ftp.povray.org seems depleted - /pub/povray/utilities only has moray and
breeze in it :(

David

Perhaps not the best but at least a very simple and fast way is to use
Fast Movie Processor to turn them into AVI-files. It takes a list of
BMPs or TGAs and pastes them together with any codec you choose.
I can't remember where I got it but try Tucows or ZDnet.

Good luck,

Heh heh. I'm not aware of any free gif makers, though PSP 5 will do it. It
will set you back around $70 US. You can get a free demo from www.jasc.com.

There are a number of other tools listed under the animation FAQ at
www.irtc.org. It's a quick place to start. My personal favorite for making
.avi is videdit, which is free from microsoft. Combined with the indeo 5
codec, it can make good quality videos that are pretty small. The only
problem with using videdit is that it needs sequenced .dib files, which are
a flavor of bmp. What I do is render tga's and then batch convert them to
.dib using Paint Shop Pro. It can also import .flc, which is good if you
have animation created with DTA. The down side is that flc are 256 colors,
which doesn't look so hot.

Actually, there's a handy little utility for converting flic's to animated
gif's which I like to use in conjunction with dta. You can find it at
http://www.cs.hmc.edu/~jlawson/graphics/

Microsoft have a feww .GIF maker (I forget it's name) which can
convert AVI's to animated GIFs. I forget where it is exactly though :(

DTA can also convert .TGA (and other file formats) to .DIB for VidEdit
to pull in without dropping to 256 colours. Unfortunately this can
result in a LOT of HDD space being used while making an animation...

Videdit can read .BMPs directly, just put the name of the first file
into the file name box and when it asks for the format, tell it DIB
sequence. Since the platform specific format for windows (and DOS?) is
.bmp, no conversion is required.

Cheers, PoD.

Well, I'm replying to my own message here :)

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I rendered the glsbng images to create 60 .bmp files by opening the
C:\Program Files\POV-Ray for Windows v3.1\scenes\animate\boing\glsbng.ini
file in POV Ray 3.1 the doing a 'Run' - an hour or so later (I didn't hang about!!) I
had 60
.bmp files.

I then used Paint Shop Pro 4.12 to batch convert the .bmp files to .tga
(http://www.jasc.com)
I used the 'Batch convert' option in the file menu - pretty easy really!

Then I used ANIMATE to convert the tga files to an animated .gif
(http://members.xoom.com/amcfarlane/)
the command "animate gls*.tga"
produced a great looking animated gif!!
(And the docs are about 1 page long!!)

It did have some pixel sparkle round the brick joins - I think I used anti-aliasing.
Maybe I'll try it later and see if it looks better without AA...

Ta Ken, I did download Main Actor but it looked pretty OTT for my initial
requirements!!
(I spent a few minutes with it but it seemed to require each frame to be dragged and
dropped
into position - dead slow!! - Mind, I haven't read the docs yet.)

You may want to add the comments above to your animation FAQ/Tutorial
I needed quick gratification..... hmm, I wonder if that means I'm going to have some
problems with raytracing... maybe I'll start asking daft questions like "Why *can't*
you use
GL" ...

David

PS. I know the answer - I used to work for SGI before they became an NT shop ;)
(and yes I used to get to play in the Reality Centre 8] )

I didn't know that. Might come in handy when using 3.1 with it's default .bmp
output.

You can skip this step by getting POVRay to ouput .tga files directly
(using +FT or +FC, see "File Output Options" section of the 3.1 docs).
