A feature I just recently dicovered, but... brilliant!

*Select a collumn (ctrl+drag)
*This works even better if you select a no-character-wide (yes, 0
character)
  some-character-height collumn
*Type some text
*Praise the pov team

That's all folks!

As I don't know wich part is oscure, I'll explain everything
(1) select a collumn: with the new editor, you can select block of
texts in different lines without selecting the entire lines. It is
akin to a rectangle selection in a paint program, or to the rubberband
in the pov image window. Try this: hold control key down, click and
drag to select some text. See?

(2) a 0 character wide, some character height: this is difficult to
explain, but once you see it it'll be perfectly clear.
Ctrl+click'n'drag down, but do not move your mouse horizontally (well,
you can, as the selection isn't done untill you release the button).
You can make linear selection that englobes no character but goes
through many lines... maybe this is why pov's flashing cursor is so
thick...

(3) type some text: well, I do not know how to further explain this.

(4) TRY IT

Ok?

If you didn't know about collumnar selection, try also cutting,
copying and pasting, and dragging the selection...

Povingly,

Philippe

That's... interesting. I've never seen anything like that
before. It'd be useful for modifying a bunch of similar lines
in exactly the same way, I guess.

Yes! And try writing a color_map... presto!

Column selects were in several DOS text editors.
This feature has been missing from windows apps;
until now. For those who use a strict structural
approach to their pov script writing will find this
feature a boon.

Knowing this feature exists will inform how I
eventually modify the insert menu of 3.1 ...

For the record, there is a very good Windows editor named "Ultra Edit"
which also has a column select mode. I find it extremely handy for
many things. It can help when editing CSV files, POV mesh files,
arrays of objects (not the modern implementation of the "array"
keyword, but old fashioned lists of similiar objects that shared one
or more 3-D coordinates, or other common characteristics.)

I'm very pleased to see that it's now a feature in POV-Ray. Now if it
were only possible to automatically paste a sequential series of
numbers into that selection... :)

Textpad (www.textpad.com) can do that.

Actually, so can Ultra Edit. It would be cool if POV could do that
some day, but it's not an urgent request. I'll have a look at Textpad
and see what it's like.
