I know in DOS there is DTA (yay! :) and various other programs to create
AVI and GIF animations. However, I am looking for a program that can do
the same thing, plus, maybe MPEG creation. At this moment, I really
could use the GIF animatino smoosher as I'm trying to make animated GIFs
on my web-page....

If you can give me any hints to where such a program might be, I'd
apreciate the help

The latest versions of GIMP (www.gimp.org) are capable of handling
animated GIFs.

Actually I use GIMP just for that (figured it out after actualyl getting off
my butt to look up stuff, hehe). It's not very easy to do, though....at least
I don't know how to do some things - like reverse the playback of an animated
GIF (I think there's a plugin that may help with they, but the newer version
of GIMP doesn't seem to have it - unless GIMP has been upgraded to include
it).

Now all I need is an MPEG encoder and I'm all set :)

I always recommend the Berkeley MPEG Tools.  Command-line interface,
highly configurable, really handy.  Search for "Berkeley MPEG Tools"
on <http://www.freshmeat.net/>.

For gif animations I use gifmerge.

I found them very useful. For mpeg creation I used the mpeg tools on my
LINUX box at home (I found them difficult to handle) and at work I use
dmconvert but this is a program made by SGI and is not free (but very
convenient).

before, but the results were always about MP3 software....

Do these utilities have control over playback direction? (Ie can I reverse
the order of the frames without doing it by hand, like I must do with GMIP?)

I'll be sure to check them out, though. GIMP is great, but is very
time-consuming to make a simple animation (at least, it is without a script)

AFAIK this is not the case ... sorry!

If you are familiar with shell scripts or perl you could write a small
script that would change the numbering. Just an idea.

Well, I know a script when I see it, and I can do real simple things...I just
don't know the syntax of a script. Suppse I can get off lazy behind and go look,
