What I fear is that they are focusing too much on niche features
and too little on the mainstream features (ie. video games).

We got a bit of a taste what happens when they do that, with the
pre-hype of the Xbox One. Microsoft focused too much on something
people were not interested in (ie. the console being a multimedia
enhancer) and too little on the things that people are interested
in (ie. video games). Microsoft missed the ball quite completely
there.

I'm not interested in using a VR headset as a toy, nor am I interested
in using it for modeling. I'm interested in using it for playing video
games. So I'm worried about whether they are spending way too much
effort on the former and too little on the latter.

The major reason I'm worried is price: If too much work is put into
the project, it will drive the price up.

It seems to combine some AR-type features, I was wondering if it would be
possible to make a Doom 3 type game with your surroundings re-skinned in a
Doom theme.

The cheaper alternative would be Google Cardboard. But there also seems to
be no games available for it, and very few apps.

I would say that it is a strategy. Marketing it for a niche group would
not raise much finance.

Someone will be working on that. I can imagine.
I saw a (mock up of a?) system that projected objects into your
surroundings on the BBC Tech pages.
I can't find the clip but I think that it was in the last six months.

This gadget, maybe?

No. IIRC you wore AV glasses and 3D objects were projected on them.
If you combined that with your gadget. Nekar's Doom would be possible.

This is exactly the kind of niche feature I'm afraid of. It looks to me
that they are spending *way* too much time and effort on the augmented
reality features. And for what? The average user (like me) is not
interested in those features. AR might be fun to play with... for
perhaps a half hour tops. 99.99% of the usage would be for video games
which do not benefit at all from AR. And I don't think I'm the only one
who is like that.

So putting so much effort on the AR capabilities is just a waste of
time which may raise the price of the device for nothing.

I like both worlds. I personally would like something that can do everything
from e-mail to casual AR games to full-on fps.

And I'm still waiting for a holodeck.

And you know that you're an average user because...?

Matter of fact, we won't know how many people will be interested in AR
until it's actually available and has been experimented with.

Then again, AR has taken off years ago already. QR codes have become
commonplace, for instance. It's strange that people always think of AR
as being strictly tied to 3D.

No? I could see video games benefiting hugely from AR.

(Also, for a look at a possible future of AR, see the anime 'Dennou Coil'.)
