Hello everybody,
I'm as new to POV as they come (<a week) and my head is reeling
after all that reading ! But I'm hooked and the only 12 steps I'm ready to
take would have to lead me to great renderings.
Now the question : running Pov-Ray 3.1e it complains that it can't
open the file c:\T.pov or c:\t.pov everytime that I try to open a file that
I dowloaded from the net, no matter where I placed it even the very folder
where my own poving goes. The problem happened when I tried to use
TextureView (the latest dowloaded minutes ago). If somebody else had that
experience I'd feel less lonely. If somebody had a solution, I'd know that
I'm in good company :).

There is a solution I believe someone told of recently (few weeks ago?)
in one of these groups, povray.general being the most likely, or
povray.utilities, and if you can "Search" though them back a month or so
you may find it. Either that someone does know, just a matter of time
they see this.
I have an idea though, make a fake, empty t.pov and put it in C:\ root
directory and see if that satisfies the program.

What scene (.pov file) are you trying to run? You should attach that to
your note. Also, what platform are you running pov on (Win95/98, NT, MAc,
UNIX, ...)?
You need to give people this info so we can help.

I understand Jim,
only I was expecting that my case wasn't so unique that it couldn't
be easily recognized by somebody who went through the same thing.
To answer your questions :
The OS is Win98. (french version : there may lie the problems as the
POV complains refer to non existing files and folders whose names are in
French, like "Can't open C:\ fichier t.pov". The naming is inconsistent
though ; I had "C:\ t.pov" and "C:\T.pov". Oh yes, that one too "C:\Program
Files\POV-Ray for Windows v3.1\INCLUDE\colors.inc:156: error: No objects in
scene." Really!)
The POV version is 3.1e.
The file has been, in one case, "skyvase.pov", obtained from
http://www.haveland.com/povbench/index.htm.
but it can be just any other that I dowloaded.
The behavior is consistent in that respect that I can't render a
perfectly good file like "skyvase" although I've opened it in the editor
already. Well I've read a bit about library paths and thought of placing the
file in the very same folder where my own production goes (and renders from
whithout any problem) but POV kept complaining in the same manner.
Since yesterday I, accidentaly, found what seems to be a remedy,
although not an explanation : once in my personal folder I modify the file
It doesn't make much sense but it works, until now.

First I want to thank everyone who tried to help me. It was almost
impossible for anyone to find the solution as you'll see but it showed a
genuine concern for the fellow pover which is comforting.
time since it had been a problem for me and my computer that I had forgotten
downloaded files since the first days of Win95. Never a problem until POV
which doesn't seem to understand them and just stop reading when it meets
one, hence the message "Can't open c:\fichiers t.pov". I tested most of the
other program I run and none has that problem. The rest was of my own doing
since I've never been able to conform my mind to the strict syntax habit of
computing.
Thought that many would like to know especially new users.
