I use a pc.
A friend of mine uses Pov on a Mac, and there are problems with
the .pov files he send me; they come de-formatted, with strange
symbols. I had the seemingly same problem with Chris Huff's
macro utils (and it looks as I'm not the only one).
1) how should he/we do to transfer pov files right ?
2) he seems to say that the pov files on a mac retain information
such as resolution, render settings... How does it work ?
Fabien.

This information is stored as "resources" in the Mac file. Mac files can
have two different "forks", a data fork (which is where the POV scene file
will be) and the resource fork, which contains information about the file
and resources to use with it (fonts can be transferred inside a documents
resource fork, for example, although this is rarely used).
If the files are being sent to you as text files, you shouldn't be having
any trouble; it may be that your friend's e-mail software doesn't know
that POV files are text files, or is being told not to send text files as
text files (this would be useful if, for example, you used a Macintosh and
wanted the resources intact).
In Eudora Light, the setting is under the "Settings" menu item, "Always
Send Macintosh Information". Turn that off, and it will not send Macintosh
information for text files.

The problem is that Windows uses a different code for return than the
Mac. POV-Ray should work fine with these files, though readability is a
severe problem.
>1) how should he/we do to transfer pov files right ?<
Either your friend will have to use a word processor to convert the
files to PC text format, or you will have to use the "Find and Replace"
function of a Windows word processor to replace each of these characters
with a Windows style return.
>2) he seems to say that the pov files on a mac retain information

Macintosh files can have a separate fork for "resources" such as code,
graphical interface elements, icons, etc.
The Macintosh version of POV-Ray stores the settings for resolution,
etc. in this resource fork, eliminating the need for .ini files. There
is also an option to output these settings to an .ini file.
Oh, about my macro collection...if you continue to have problems, I will
upload a version in PC text format(soon, but probably not until after
school ends-June 3). I will also post a HTML version of the
documentation to text.tutorials.

There are a lot of tools on the Mac to convert files to different line
endings. Besides that, the free text editor BBEdit Lite will do the job.
It is no problems to convert PC files to the Mac - the official POV-ray Mac
supports PC, unix and Mac style line endings.

A Mac file has different "forks" (currently only two), much like the
multiple streams in Windows NT NTFS file (also there are very few NT apps
that use this feature...).

BBedit is a great text editor, but if you'd rather a specialist text
converter...
DOSWasher does a good job, small, fast, easy (drag n drop to convert
multiple docs mac<->pc)
You should be able to find it at info-mac archives or from a search at
www.filez.com
I know this is a very belated response, thought it worth it though...
