In defense of Chuck let's just say he is fairly new around here and has not
picked up on the protocols of this news server. Chuck please post your images
in povray.binaries.images. The prefered format is a compressed .jpg as that
is what the majority of news browsers can handle. If you do post in .bmp or
.tga we request that you archive the file in .zip or some similar format to
help those with slower cable access. Many pay for access by the minute and
download messages to read them offline. When you post images with large file
sizes it costs them more than those fortunate to have unlimited access of
fast cable modem access. The .png format also has a built in compression
ability so post those in compressed format if possible. There is a set of
guidelines for posting on this server in the:
povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions group on this server. It would
behove you to stop by and read this when time permits as well as the other
announcments posted in that group.

Thanks for your attention in this matter.

I don't think that was really necessary, do you? We all
make mistakes sometimes.

It's also worth noting that you posted it in the wrong group. This
group is for scene files, which usually means files in .pov or .inc
format, optionally compressed using zip or similar programs. Images
should be posted in povray.binaries.images.

Here-here! and I do mean here :)
Derogatory statements do not need to be heard, I agree. Brings moral
down.

Oh, sorry for not being PC.... you must filter out a lot of life if
you ignore anything which may lower morale...

It got said because of the extreme number of people I've found who have
no idea whatsoever of optimising images for the net (you wouldn't
believe the number of 200k jpg's I've seen on various pages that can be
resaved to 60k, with no loss of image).

Politicians - It seems to me that the worst of them could convince me
that horse shit tastes like honey-cake; the best of them would leave
me believing that I alone in all the world had failed
to enjoy its flavour.

The individual is more important then the state!

ignorance is not a mistake, and is not a wrong thing,

what is wrong is making ignorance a virtue, almost a god, and refusing
to acknowledge that one does not know something.

my point is made by the fact that he reposted the file as jpg.. hence
he must know something about jpg.. so why the bitmap in the first
place?

Probably because that's what POV for Windows generates by default,
and the issue of bandwidth hadn't occured to him until it was
too late. In any case, there's a difference between ignorance and
stupidity, and you accused him (and, apparently, most people - depends
on who you meant by "them") of being too stupid to use JPG or PNG.

Besides, in his other posts Chuck has been more than forthcoming about
the fact that he's new to POV and new to this server and thus ignorant
of the syntax and the local customs. I don't see anyone making a god
or even a virtue out of ignorance here.

There are polite ways and there are impolite ways to let someone know
they did something wrong. There's not a lot of evidence that the
impolite ways are any more effective at that job.

But, I've been in too many flamewars already this month, so that's the
last I'm gonna say on it. You either get it or you don't.

So instead of helping solve the problem of ignorance you arrogantly
criticize with out any effort to help solve the problem.

I am under no obligation to educate people, I feel no duty whatsoever to
other human beings, and what I do I do by my own choice.

There is enough info available on graphic formats (but so damn few can
actually be bothered to self-teach - most just moan and want someone
else to do the search work for them)
