I was doing some tooling about with the latest lighting challenge from 3DRender
(http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=185&t=955407) which features a
movie theatre. One of the maon aspects of lighting here will be that coming
from the screen. I first started using radiosity with an image projected on the
screen, however it was becoming apparent that it may take some really high
quality settings to get good results. I then though of using an array of area
lights created from the projector image. I had already done a lot of the
mathwork in my lightdome work, so I did some quick conversions to making a
planar version of it with some nice results.
In the attached image, the first part is radiosity with some low quality
settings. The second is using the arealight array (16 area lights, 4x4 each).

Now some of you may be asking "What film is our interpid little movie-goer
attending that has got him so awestricken?". Well in the previous example, he
has saved his allowance for month eagerly awaiting Star Wars. But perhaps he
could be viewing Planet of the Apes and has reached the climactic the climactic
finale. Or maybe ended up in a theatre showing The Shining, and the blood has
just started pouring out of the elevators. Or maybe he bought a ticket for
something else, but has snuck over to Fast Times at Ridgemount High and has
reached the memorable scene of Phoebe Cates coming out of the pool. Or perhaps
he has snuck into something far more unsavoury and adult...

Thats great! I can even remember every theater where I saw each of these
movies ;) As a long time moviegoer I feel very tempted by this
challenge, maybe I'll go for the volume light from the projector to the
screen - mostly because I have no idea yet how to effectively do that
within POV-Ray.
My movies of choice (as I do miss them in your list) would be an early
Ridley Scott movie or maybe the legendary one by John Carpenter...
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. BTW also the CGSociety main
challenge "B-Movie: Attack of the 50 Foot..." sounds like fun...

Sweet! I was looking at that one too when I grabbed the truck model from there
last week. I'm glad I could jog your memory about the challenge - it's good to
see you are actually doing it. You're off to a good start, that's for sure. I
see Ive's interested too, any more POVers up for it? Let's show 'em what we can
do :)
I have the challenge models but haven't started on it yet thanks to the SSLT
distractions this past week. But those distractions have actually opened up a
new way of thinking for me that will come in handy on that theater shot...

With early Ridley Scott, you're likely referring to either Alien or Bladerunner.
One obvious scene to choose from alien. I found a coupl that came out nice
from Blade Runner.
I tacked on Attack of the 50 Foot Woman to boot...
It's kind of neat to see how certain images will turn out when run through the
"screen machine", I'm getting kind of hooked on it now. These being minor
quality renders run through in about 3mins, it takes me longer to find the
screen caps. This is a bit different than the HDRI lightdome, as these images
are all based on LDR images so can end up with a broader range of contrast and
colouration (e.g. the second Blade Runner).
It would be kind of a neat cinematic project to study films from this side of
the screen...
As for John Carpenter, not sure which legendary one as there are many (Escape
from New York, They Live, Halloween)

From my personal past it would be the one with "Call me Snake" Plissken
as for reasons I can't remember I missed the others in the theater.
Shame on me.
Now, what's definitely meeded in this list of movies is this famous fish
film, even if the director is already present.
