Short story by Leo Tolstoy (The Death of Ivan Ilych). I'm in a short story
class at FSU. I didn't turn in my homework (creative response) on Wednesday,
so I had to turn a very creative response on Monday. I stayed up till 5AM
doing this. I should have used a higher max_trace_level. Weep with me. <17
hours to render. I'm turning it in like this. No time for a rerender. :(

Nice to hear raytracing can SAVE a grade rather than
the more usual.... lowering our grades!

The moment it hit my eyes I thought of "surreal", then I couldn't help but
notice how the couch looks pasted into the rendering. Yet it does seem to
be rendered as well. Was it done separately using the alpha channel and
image mapped in?
Good going on the last resort to get homework done.  Been there, done that;
just not anything like this.

Nope. The couch is 3D and is not flat... Maybe it's the fill light creating
that illusion. I'll see what I can do. This is a WIP. I'm turning in this
version, but I'll keep working on it.

If this isn't "very" creative, I don't know what is. :)

I sort of see what you mean, though not really. I think what is causing it
is the contrast between the red chair and blue carpet. The patterns clash in
a way that makes it look a bit 2D, an optical illusion of sorts. I like the
books, the globe, and the use of radiosity.

The composition looks good, it has much potential IMO. But the lighting
seems to be improvable, radiosity settings (if it's used, i'm not totally
sure) should have a lower error_bound, the sunlight should be smaller
leading to sharper shadows. Furthermore i think higher contrast would be
more realistic.

Nice. How did you do the books?

Very nice!

I especially like the globe and the books (how did you align them?).

I suggest that you randomize the textures for the chairs so they are not
exact copies.

I don't personally like the blue textures on the chairs, nor the blue
texture on the carpet. It looks too fake IMO. Try to come up with some more
realistic patterns. :)

The wall textures and the floor also seem strange to me. (who has a polished
marble floor???)

I think the image is nice already but IMO it could be improved if you try to
make all elements in the image have the same "antique style" as the
bookshelves, the table, the chairs, the globe etc.

It could also be that you're not heading for that antique style at all.
Either way I look forward to see how it turns out.

They're part of Gilles' library macros.

It's all part of Gilles' macros. Ask him. :)

This occured to me after the render finished. I plan to do so.

:| I'll try...

The wall was quick and dirty. I wanted to finish the darn thing quickly. Um,
and we have a floor like that, made up of imitation-marble tiles.

Working on it...

I was. This was in the 1840s-1850s.

Same here! :) In my latest test-render the spots are gone. I'll start
working on the rest.
