I've been playing with glows and radiosity though Moray (Thanks to Keith
Hull for the plugin) and this is what happened after I got carried
away...
All lighting is done through glows without light sources and using
radiosity, with a total of 21 glows in the scene.
The image started off as just the sofa (well, I call it a sofa, it's only
four cubes with appropriate transformations, and I wouldn't want to sit
on it myself :) in a white box.
Then I added the Left hand standard light thing as a quick tweak. Then
came the right hand light. Then the coffee table. Then the blueish
light source out of shot as a TV simulation. Then the white box I'd been
using as an area light went, to be replaced by an array of glows. And
then finally, from somewhere, came the idea of the floating eyeballs...
And the only textures in the scene which aren't a plain white are the two
textures on the eyeballs.
Any comments? But bear in mind that this was designed to keep rendering
times to a minimum while I played with glows, although the (currently)
final render did use some pretty ludicrous settings.
Bye for now,
Jamie.

I would like to see some more done with this. I like the idea a lot. Some
suggestions:
Keep the light source inside the TV, but place an image map in front of it
with some screenshot with added transparency.
The way the front of the "cushion" is set makes me think it could easilty
become a mouth, along the lines of the Aardman animation "Not without my
handbag." (I can't find a screenshot, sorry)
A bit more anthropomorphication on the couch, add a couple of empty chip
bags, and you've got a fun scene.

I cheated. There *is* no TV, just a blueish glow :) But it may be
worth doing..

I was looking at the image after I posted it, and realised that since
there were no well defined shadows from the eyes, it wasn't possible to
tell exactly where they were... In fact, they're floating in midair
above the couch.
I was thinking more along the lines of empty pizza boxes and coke bottles
to fill out the scene myself... <grin>
Thanks for the comments.
Bye for now,
Jamie.

I like it a lot, especially the simple design of the scene, just the bare
essential
The pair of eyes needs to get more visibility. perhaps add a glow close to
them ...

No, that was a semi inspired accident :)
Oh, and if by some chance anybody wants the source (in either Moray .mdl
if you have the glow plugin, or moray exported .pov), then feel free to
ask.
One thing that I may get round to doing is a quick animation, with the
blue light source flickering...
Bye for now,
Jamie.

If you sit behind the TV for a while and watch the flicker you'll notice
that it starts flickering really fast while the adverst are on and returns
back to slow colour sweeps when the program resumes.
Does everyone else already know this or have I just been raytracing too long?

Watching TV too long at least. Commercials are usually fast-paced, same as
action parts of movies. I've seen a lot of slow commercials too, usually a
cleaning product or food item I guess.

It may be similar to an effect you can get from watching the reflections
from a swimming pool on a wall or other suitable surface. If you focus
on them, then they seem to speed up and slow down, regardless of what's
happening in the pool. In my case I get an occasional lurch in my
stomach as my brain is trying to convince my semi-lunar canals that I'm
actually moving.
Bye for now,
Jamie.
