It may be similar to an effect you can get from watching the reflections 
from a swimming pool on a wall or other suitable surface.  If you focus 
on them, then they seem to speed up and slow down, regardless of what's 
happening in the pool.  In my case I get an occasional lurch in my 
stomach as my brain is trying to convince my semi-lunar canals that I'm 
actually moving.
