As for the darkness, that might be a monitor thingy, it's quite fine on
mine. It also explains why you think there's a big blank at the top, there
are actually darkblue waterdrops there. On a 1024x768 version there are only
100 lines of blackness, until waterdrops begin to appear.

As for centering on the man: that's an no-no. As a rule of thumb: try
*never* to put the point of interest into the *exact* center of the image.
Also, in this image, you feel like he's too low, which is what I want to
express: he's down. The image-ratio also helps to create a direction where
to look: you just have to look downwards to see him.

So its all intentional and not by accident. :-)

I actually was wondering about a lamppost. I just might model one and look
and how it adds to the image. But a song? "Singing in the rain" comes to
mind, but this guy is sad.

Yes but the object of being sad is to be happy, just as the object of
being wet is to be dry. I look at the half full glass :-)
If you want sad, make the figure stand dejected and downcast. (Easy
for me to say:-)
Still, it has an inner depth.

A lamppost with a broken bulb... adds to the sadness.
as for a song, something in a minor scale comes to mind, especially music by
Dowland. Maybe you could add music bars in the background, hardly seen, and
going downwards at the same time they would disappear in the darkness.
Just a thought.

But it is a nice piece of work, as is!

I have had a funny experience with this image (with take 1 in fact, but 
it's the same). I first had a look at the picture on my usual computer, 
with Ifranview, which shows the image in a large window with a black 
background. As the background of your image is also fully black, I 
thought that the pic was the full window showed by Ifranview, with an 
aspect ratio that is wider than it is high (4/3-ish), and with the 
character and the light occupying only ~1/3 of the pic, on the left (the 
rest being all black). Then, on another computer, I saw the image with 
its true apesct ratio.

I am allowed to say that I prefer the wide aspect ratio ;-) ? I find it 
reinforces the loneliness feeling in the pic. Anyway, it likes the 
picture very much ! Simple and effective.

Well, the wide aspect, though placing him very lonely, would not get as much
"downward" feeling to it. Additionally, an image filled with black space...
You see, when you use it as a wallpaper, black can be the default color, and
there you go: saved some memory. :-)

Tim,

I have a niggling worry about the conservation of matter. The splash seems 
just too dense - like someone dumped a bucket of water on the brolly - or 
sad-bag's standing under a downspout. However the rain density above the 
umbrella is relatively low - it seems it should just produce a melancholy 
dripping off the edge. Perhaps I'm missing an element of melodrama here?

Nah. There's a particle system that drops rain from above. The only problem
with the umbrella is, how to set it up properly to have the water more or
less pour down the umbrella. What I do is almost completely negate the
velocity, so the drops get very slow and roll off the umbrella. But since
they move slower, they cluster up more easily. Might have to work a little
on that, though I kinda like it.
