Hi,

I just played around with the new version of PoV and this is what came out.
I know, ..., not really good, but is one of my first tries.
Everything is simple CSG beside the sheet on the table and the tip of the
pen (HamaPatch).
I defined a macro for the jalousie at the window (so that I can define the
rotation of the elements and the hight in an easy way) and  a second one for
placing these metal plates inside the glas thingy (don't know the name in
english). The wooden manequin was done with moray with complet IK setup
(didn't worked as expected, but still helpfull). The table has an simple
wooden texture (+some warps) and is covered by a small layer (box) of glass
to fake the coating.
Photons took 5 hours, rendering additional 26 hours (1GHz, 128MB). The post
process was done with HCR (by Ch. Horman, if think).

hope you like it and have some suggestions for improvements.

Too much... you may want to change/reduce the settings used and/or add collect off to
some objects...

Agh... where does this awful render time come from? Did you use radiosity (if you
did, it doesn't look so)?

"I think?" :-) Credit where it's due. Great prog BTW.

Yes I do like it.
Just lower the ambient to 0 please. The shadowed parts on the sheet look way too
bright.
Instead, try and use a fill light or (better but slower) let radiosity do the work
for you.
The main light is too... white.. add a little bit of yellowish hue. Jaime's lighting
macros would be very useful in this case.
The sheet could use better textures: it looks fake right now, add some wrinkles/dirt
to it.
The black objects look too black: I do use rgb 0 too but with some variable
reflections...

Very well done for one of your first images. Nice composition and nice
theme.

Of course ;-)

The pen targets directly into my eye, so it would be better to turn it and
have it from left to the right. The black part of the pen does not look very
good, it is too dark and you cannot see the shape of the pen because all
light is "swallowed". The white part is great as well as the feather (is
this the right word?).

You blurred the image or used focal blur, I do not know but I would make the
background more blurry (from a photographer point of view), because this
would put the pen and the glass thing (I dont know the word either) more in
the focus of the viewer.

First of all I think I have to apologize for the bad english, but it was
quite late yesterday.
The program HCR is of course from Ch. Hormann. I used it to add focal blur.
Both of you pointed exactly out my biggest problems: setting up light and
working with textures.
The long render time comes due usage of radiosity, but some objects still
look flat.
For the sheet I used a normal modifier (crackle) which worked well in the
test renderings. For now I will concentrate on the improvement of the
textures (especially the yellow rings which are supposed to look like gold),
later I may add a plant in the corner of the room.

Would be nice if someone could point me to the location of this macro.

It's focal blur, but I had problems to setup a good curve for the depth
dependent blur. Will try to increase blurring in the back and decrease it in
the front.

The focal blur seems to have strong bleeding effect on the upper part of
the glass.  Have you tried the 'bleed reduction' function? It is very slow
but could possibly help.

  It's a very nice image for a first post. As you said, it's only a matter 
of work and patience. The plant on the corner would be a great addition. An 
achmea would suffice... ;)

Thanks, but actually post processed focal blur is very easy to spot,
especially in scenes with reflection and refraction.

This is a really great first image, don't know if the photons were worth 
five hours, but it all works nicely.
