He, this one is called "serpent of the sea" (oops another mistake in one of
my subject lines :-})! If you want the nice ship have a look at
http://marc-hendrik.bremer.bei.t-online.de/bilder/Schiff1024x768.jpg (173
kb).
Actually, the longer I work with the model the more I notice all the
mistakes I made in it. Things don't fit together and such. I think I'll fix
all that when I port it to v3.5 - perhaps.

Well, I changed it to some pale pink atm. That fits quite well. That man
will never look realistic IMO.

I had another look at your web side, but using more transparency seems to
make it even slower. It seems there was a normal left over from the last
render with this water. I'm running a render without it at the moment.

Water is definitely a very difficult thing to make realistic and it changes
from environment to environment. Couldn't you be so kind and make some
water.inc with lots of different waters predefined? Would help me a lot and
there is still lots of fun poving without having to wait for just another
watertest scene to finish. :-)

Thanks,

Thanks!
Splashes, yes. I think about it. Can't imagine a good way to implement them
without a particle system or lot's of fine tuning. Don't know if they are
worth the effort - that ship is supposed to be some hundred meters away.

Yep, for now I'll leave it the way it is. Maybe the lower camera position
would increase the sense of depth in this scene, but it loses a bit of the
desperate feeling IMO.

I really would like to achieve what you suggest, but I can't get it to work.
I added reflection (even variable reflection) and specular highlights to the
skin and hair, but it looks dry anyway. Once he looked like Data from
StarTrek, 'cause his skin went pale from the reflections. Do you have some
example for wet objects?

I tried it, but it did not add much to the picture. I'll leave it the way it
is for now.

Thanks. The texture is just
pigment{wrinkles
          pigment_map{
          [0.5 crackle color_map{ [0 rgb <0.8,0,0>]
                                                    [1 rgb <3,0,0>]
                                 }]
          [0.9 rgb <1,1,0>*3]}
    }
normal {crackle 0.9 }

and another sphere_sweep with emitting media
density {
              wrinkles
                  color_map {
                           [0.0 color rgb <0.0, 0.0, 0.0>]
                           [0.5 color rgb <1, 0.3, 0.0>/1.5]
                           [1.0 color rgb <1.0, 0.5, 0.0>/1.3]
                   }
                   turbulence 1.2
                   frequency 2
                   scale <.9,0.9,0.9>*10
               } }

Quite fast.

Hello!

Actually he is long-haired, with a pony tail or whatever it might be called.
Can't see that of course so it doesn't help. No beard. I know you like them,
and I'm wearing one, too, but for some reason seaman have no beards in my
imagination. The more I'm thinking about it the stranger it gets, taking all
those Redbeards and such. In addition, I think, hair is one of the most
difficult things to do in Pov.

I really wouldn't like to model some wet medieval costume for the man. They
tell you that taking of your clothes when you fall in the sea is a bad idea,
'cause it's the only protection against the cold. He will have to make his
way, without them, anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Marc-Hendrik

Ah, you've checked out my homepage! ;-) Sorry, that there are no PoV-Ray
renderings up to now... currently, I'm working on the Space section, I'm
sure I will feature there some raytraced Solar System or even extrasolar planet

space art scenes...

Also long hair? I haven't visited your homepage up to now, but kept track of
your
previous PoV works - so I think of you as a typical Middle Ages re-inactment/
fantasy roleplaying geek, and this would fit the image quite well...

Yes, that's probably true. I myself didn't dig into the modelling of scalp or
facial
hair until now, but it would be a tremendous task when it comes to populating
my
Khyberspace scenes with authentically looking Afghans...

No more. About one centimeter nowadays. My beard is not that long either.
You probably wouldn't like it that much. :-)

That would have been very difficult 'cause I have none yet. I just uploaded
some of my pics to some webspace my provider ... hm ... provides for me.

>but kept track of your

Actually, I'm not sure if I want to fit that image. For some reasons
roleplaying games tend to attract those soziopathic guys, which don't get
enough of a real life. At least I think I'm not of that kind. :-) Fantasy
Roleplaying can get quite a lot in the way of your real life. Those who keep
warning, that those games might be dangerous, usually don't know what
they're talking about, but they are right in a way. You can get very
distracted. Maybe that's the case with every hobby or art you are able to
express yourself in. It's important to keep in touch with RL- which is
sometimes easier and sometimes harder if you take a step aside to play, pov,
paint or whatever your way is to express yourself .

Thanks for the trigger for these thoughts, Yadgar.
