Try using the eval_pigment function in Megapov for this. Define a pigment and
then use the returned value to define the probability of apparition (or scale,
rotation etc.) of the object . You can even use an image_map for this if you
want very tight control.

Few Notes about the Harry Potter Movie....

1) It is being filmed in the UK
2) Most if not all of the cast is either British or Dual Citizenship
3) It is Being Filmed at Warwick castle (i think i may be wrong on this one)
4) And they already have Pics from the movie so far.

Thanks for the update. I guess I should be reassured ;)

Nice owl, by the way. How did you model that? Isosurface?

Actually, that would be *less* random, in a strict sense, but more natural.

I've got one. I use a image map as a density pattern. When I choose a
point, it looks up the density and has to meet the threshold with an
additional random number. In addition, that random number determines the
tree size, if it is successful. When a tree is added, the density is
lessened, meaning that the trees group, but big trees stifle growth around
them. Gives very nice 'copsing' behavior.

An example image can be found at
http://darwin.cwru.edu/wedig/public_html/wgraphics/Leaves.jpg

It uses Gilles Trans' tree macro, and a really awful HF, but other than
that, looks pretty nice.

The code is not ready for prime time, but if you want it, I'd be willing to
send a copy, or post it to sf.

It's a different type of "noise", white noise vs. pink noise vs. gaussian (etc
there's probably more). Maybe mathematicians consider some more "random", I don't
know enough to say for sure. But definitely, a fractaline gaussian noise would be
more natural for this scenario.

There are lots of notes you can find online....

The official site is www.harrypotter.com

You can also find lots of stuff on Yahoo by searching for "Harry Potter".

Don't know about Warwick Castle - it's possible that some of the filming may
be there but I do know that the main location for Hogwarts is Gloucester
Cathedral, which has caused some controversy amongst Christians because of
the witchcraft associations (although Gloucester locals including the Dean
and Chapter of the Cathedral don't seem to be so concerned).

For the record "First years are not allowed to use their own modelling
tools"

Just wanted to mention that I saw a site yesterday with some trivia on the movie
and my scpeticism turned into mild enthusiasm when I looked at the cast. Seems
that John Cleese and Rik Mayall are playing (minor) parts. That should be fun. I
also like the choice of Robbie Coltrane. Too bad I'll have to wait until
november to see it.

I don't think this is weird - just different. Because of the conditions it
got great publicity and I think that it is fair to say that only the BBC
would agree to work in this way.
