Ya... the explosion does look a little ouf of place. When will NASA just go
blow something up in space so we can see for real what it looks like.

Antialiasing would be nice too.

But the rocks... those are just insane. You could just make a picture of a
bunch of those floating around in space and it would look great.

Looks pretty excellent!  I really love your sense of design.  I just
checked out your website and was reminded of all the cool stuff I've
seen coming from your direction.

	-- I loved the planetary rings

	-- I loved the emense sense of scale that slight
	   curvature of the planet and the rings bring out

	-- *I* like the explosion, but it might work just as well
	   if it were a bit more transparent.


	But, of course, I do have a few gripes.

	-- This space scene should probably be a little more stark.
	   I mean, the shadows should look almost pitch black, cause
	   almost all the light from the scene is coming from the
	   star with just a little fill coming from the planet and
	   the rings.  This is most noticeable in the giant asteroid
	   in the bottom of the frame.

	-- I think the gas giant could be made much cooler by using
	   layered textures (one cloud color per layer) or by
	   actually making several layers of spheres with different
	   colored clouds on them so that they could cast shadows
	   on each other.

	-- Finally, (whew!) I think the asteroid shape looks a little
	   funny.  It would probably benefit a lot by adding craters
	   of some kind.  If fact, maybe the majority of the shape
	   should be like a potato that someone has attacked with
	  a melon baller!!

Wow! That's a lot of stuff.  But really, keep up the great work, and I'm
sure I'll see your name in lights someday.

Quite stunning...even more so then some of your past work.  As others have
mentioned, you've definitely outdone yourself...

Alright...enough mindless praise;)

The ships and the meteorites are inarguably the most finely crafted (I don't
know which I like better).  Extra points for the fiery explosion trails.  My
only significant criticism would be the crand of the rings which look overly
"rough".  The sharp distinction between some of the rings looks artificial
IMHO.

Oddly enough this hasn't depressed me but instead inspired.  I see this and
realize what can truly be accomplished with this humble little raytracer.

Overall, this has been a pleasant surprise for an otherwise mundane
Wednesday.  I was wondering where you were going with the hull you posted
last week.

Now I dare ask...the lensflare and nebulae, yours or an include?

This incredible scene makes me feel small in many ways! I also would 
like to see more details of the vessel, its structure etc.

What is the reason that the color/contrast boundaries look so sharp? It 
would be nice to have an idea what your rendering conditions were. Did 
you really not use AA?

Neat pic. As usual I get the sense that it is either cover art or
illustration for a sci fi story. I like the "feel".

One comment, besides the razor sharp edges on the rings: when I first
viewed the pic at full resolution on my 800x600 monitor, I saw it in
vignettes, the first of course being the upper left corner. At the time
I missed the lens flare ring (seeing only the glare), but on
subsequently shrinking the image to fit my screen and seeing the flare
ring I lost some sense of the vast emptiness of space. In other words,
the ring acted as a space filling element (like the planet and the
rings). I appreciated the sense of vacuum which I got in my first
impression. Just a thought.

The rings are quite a distance from the ships.  Upwards of 15,000 units.

Nebula- mine.  Nor Galaxy.inc involved. :)

I didn't think so either, but I agree that stylistically it's fine. Fits the
crisp look and coloration of the rest of the scene. Has kind of an acrylic
look.
