Here is a test scene made showing the abilities of the grass macro I
just uploaded to povray.binaries.scenes-files.
The grass still renders as fast as it did before.
I hope somebody finds a good use for my macro!

Hmmm, so why not use this as a type of fur too? That seems something it could
be if applied via 'trace()'. If it remains reasonably fast rendering that
could be a good use also.

Speaking of trace(), I modified country_grass to allow it to adapt to the
contours of the terrain it grows on (i.e. it moves up or down to place its
base at the intersection point on the terrain, just like my modification of
Gilles' grass). Here's an example image...

Great. The only thing wrong with all of these is the barren rock --- mud,
soil, whatever--- look to the ground for such a lush kind of grass :-)
instead of a more old-growth sod kind of thing. Just my inclusion of a
negative comment as usual.

nice, really nice, i need grass in a recent scene i did, and ended up using
a mesh i found online, looked ok but the render time sucked

i will give it a go!,
my lack of ability at povray coding (caused by a moray dependency) may mean
it will be a long while before i figure out how to use it tho! - how about a
moray plug!

That could be fixed by applying a grass texture to the ground instead of
a dirt texture...a simple texture varying between shades of green and
brown would work. The problem is that lawn grass is more dense and has
layers of blades of different length in different orientation, and dead
blades at the bottom...this actually looks much like the grass in the
area around our ponds(sparse clumps, with dirt/sand in between).
One possible feature for this include: the ability to control the
density/height of the grass with a pigment. With this, it should be
possible to control the grass placement precisely with the object
pattern, or to make "grass faces" by using an image_map.
