Using v.05 of HE Days Real Explosion, I converted it to a macro, as this
scene uses about 4 altogether. This version is a definite improvement, it
even renders faster :) this image took about 2/3 the time of the last one.

I would still like to put some black smoke clouds in the background, I
thought of using media in a column of hollow spheres or a blob, but I
haven't had much experience with media and even less with MegaPOV media, I
would really appreciate the help.

Or if anyone knows how to do it with textures or isosurfaces (I wish I
understood them).

Regards,

Peter H.

very cool. This waould make a good animation with the death ray coming
down and the explosion engulfing the whole city. If you check out the
"First Strike at Pearl Harbor" web site (I forget the url right now, but
it is on the POV site and the IRTC site), I think they tell us how they
made the thick black smoke in their scene. Just a thought.

very nice scene....

one thing I'd like to comment on. I thinkt he tripods and the
explosions/ray are pretty good (although a death ray like the one that
glass elephant had a while back would look way cool), but the buildings
need work. They just look like plastic toys and it is really holding the
entire scene back.

Maybe, even if you keep these buildings the same, but change from day to
night lighting. throw in a couple street lights or something with a low
glow around them, but primarily have the explosions light the entire
scene.

just some ideas,
ross.

Not sure but look at the post by SamuelT. "Volumetric Non-Media..."
I thought it looked like a much better example of smoke or smog than clouds
and w/ a little effort... Who knows...
Just a few posts away...

I still like the old explosion better... It was original and looked more to be
what a death ray would cause... Like an atomic blast...???

Hey, wouldn't a heat ray just melt something. I mean, metal does not just blow
up from heat. Gas does, but not metal or concrete. So shouldn't the building
be, melting?
(hint hint)

Guess what, that glass elephant's fire used H.E.Day's fire code
(though quite modified) :)

Depends on the amount of heat involved. If enough heat is transferred
to the building with sufficient speed, the whole of it will start
burning at once, and the gases released in the process will expand
rapidly, thus an explosion will take place. Like in Stephen Kings'
"Firebringer"

I am -not- a Steven King fan, but wasn't that "FireStarter"?

I suggest that you lower the diffuse on the explosion to < .25 . Also,
lowering the "Detail" to < .01 .
This should increase the believability of the scene.
Keep 'em coming!
