I just tried my first animation with POVray, creating a GIF
animation. When I used the result as Wallpaper on my PIII it couldn't
handle it properly, although it looked fine in Paint Shop Pro. Is there
a way to get smooth, clear animation of a reasonable size and complexity
using the GIF format? Should I be using a different format? Why did it
work well in PSP, but not on my Desktop?
BTW, I'd like to thank whoever it was that posted the code for the
revolving camera, but I forget who it was. :) I learned about a number
of things through playing with that scene...

I just tried a small (29k) animated GIF as my background and it was jerky
and slow to move (on a P133). Have you tried looking thru the Windoz help
file? Maybe making a web page with the GIF in it and using the web page as
your background?

I tried them too, and though I got some nice results on my 400mhz I
wasn't satisfied. I didn't try the webpage thing, but it make sense, being
as how I can load up a page with several large ones when making lessons for
my child and they run fine.

I really would like "Active DeskTop" to have more support, if only for
the "Gee Whiz" effect.

Probably isn't considered much for run-time against the rest of Windows since
it's only background. A program running it would get more attention I think is
the logic in that. Seeing that you can tweak on other things though there might
be a way to do it for the background desktop (screen savers you notice are like
this too). I used to seek out many such solutions to change the way Windows
runs but that was mostly for Win 3.1 and then Win 95, I began to skip those when
I got Win 98.
You might want to try looking up Windows tweaks for the [386Enh] section of
System.ini on the internet.

So it's basically a difference in the way windows displays the GIF,
then? Well, as wallpaper, I only wanted the "gee-whiz" effect for
myself. I plan on doing some for net consumption, though, so I'll see
how it looks on a web page. Thanks all!

IMHO Active Desktop is stupid. It just takes resources away from other stuff.
That's why I cleaned a bunch of garbage out of my start-up.
Besides, the way Windows handles it is for some reason really slow. Something
on Active Desktop is slower and takes more resources than the same thing in a
browser window for some reason.

First, why not go into some more detail as to what you did and
perhaps upload the result to binaries.animation.

But if it is a big as I suspect your problem is with Windows.
Everything you are doing gets a time slice. Today good software
drops out if it needs none.

There are generically two types of OSs, interrupt driven and
polled. Windows in polled. So even if you are doing nothing all
those tasks listed when you type ctrl-alt-delete from windows are
still being asked if they need cycles and several of them will
not irregularly. Only one of those processes is running your
wallpaper.

So there is no way I can see to get smooth out of wallpaper.
Even an irrational system like Windows is going to put the
wallpaper very low on the priority list as "it rarely needs
changing." If animated desktops every become a major interest
that will certainly change.
