... well sort of.

Happy new year to you all!!! My condolences also to Ron.

For my first post of the new year/decade/century/millennium, I though I
would post something that I was working on during the summer (for one day).
I went back to it there the other day with every intention to finish it, but
only changed the texture to a die-cast brown with some blurred reflection
(done through a tiny granite normal) in the end. This was my first project
using only CSG and Pov objects for about two years. Afterwards I started but
also didn't finish the Armoured Assault Tank from the new Star Wars movie.

Warning, this image has been fairly heavily post processed (but only by
adding the glow, colourising the image, and increasing the contrast - simple
little post production things. Would it be possible to add multi-platform
post-production filters to Povray like the ones that those 3D Studio Max
people enjoy? And if not, why not?)

The gun look nice. I like the color that you used in colorizing
it. But, well, if you ever had to use this gun, the rounds would
blow up in the chamber. There is no opening for the bullet to leave
the chamber. This would be a bad thing.

I know, I haven't finished it yet (the file is called Golden Gun v0.5.jpg)

There is also no trigger, so it could never be fired, and the back of the
gun is blacked out as there is no back to it, just the rest of the large
cuboid I was carving it from.

Thanks for the tip though. Does anybody have any pictures of the chamber of
a Magnum or other revolver? I have no idea what the mechanism that lets the
chamber swing out looks like, as I have been modeling from a 2" by 1" toy,
so as you can undersatnd, I lack a bit of detail :)

Any pointers to pictures on the web would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is the same gun, but I did some quick searching around and
found some schematics at Colt's website. Here's one of them:

http://www.colt.com/colt/html/a4c9_modelaa.html

You can source out other schematics at Colt from this URL:

http://www.colt.com/colt/html/a4c_schematics.html

Hope those help. :{)

A Magnum is a bullet, isn't it? I think Parabellum/Magnum is the most
often used combination in action movies (unless they're bursting out
with Uzi's).

There's a Colt .45 mesh on the Official POV-Ray CDROM, maybe a quick
surf on the ftp mirror on cdrom.com will yield a good result.

there is no trigger either, so no worries just yet.

Really striking. Look forward to seeing next incarnation.

Would like to see a non post process version sometime-just for reference.

Works for me. Personally I have always considered the trigger a design
flaw:)

Actually you are looking for a design by manufacturer not by "magnum" or
anything like that. Smith&Wesson Model 29 or the later 629 would satisfy the
Dirty Harry image.

There are two conspicuous problems, the ratio of barrel diameter to length
and the lack of a shroud around the extractor rod beneath the barrel. In the
first problem with worst case is going to be a .44/.45 (inch) hole and a 2 inch
barrel.

http://data.smith-wesson.com/sport/results_output.cfm is a place to start.
Example attacked. As you can see you don't hve the easiest task.

OTOH the gun in the movie of that title was created for the movie and was
not a revovler. If you can find a picture of that it will be much easier to
model.
