Naw, if you're going to send someone after a monster machine, send them
after a 32-processor machine (heh). It won't do you any good to have more
processors, though, unless you are running Linux, WinNT, or some such.
'95/'98 will only use one.

Don't know about Linux, but NT Workstation will only use 2 and NT Server 4
or 8 (I think) depending on the version/license you got...

That's not an inheren OS thingy though, but typical MS policy to divide the
market into different sectors...

I think www.lsl.com is offering redhat 6.0 for free. You pay shipping
is all. Suse 6.0 came out too.

I think the slashdot story I saw on that mentioned about $8.00 for that one for
shipping and handling. Not bad compared to $199 for Win98.

Slashdot mentioned that LSL one is about $8.00 ($9.37 was also mentioned) for
shipping and handling. Also it has a limit of one per customer.

The cheapbytes is $1.99 (plus 7.75% for CA residents) plus $5.00 for S/H on up to one
pound. S/H is more for faster and/or tracked delivery (UPS, whatever), but you can
order a lot and split the S/H cost to get a better price-per-disc. That's what we did
at work.

$6.99 for one ($7.14 for CA) ain't too shabby.

10 discs bumped up to UPS Blue shipping comes to $3.15 each. Wow. Better and better.
With 18 discs (still 1 pound) and UPS Blue it comes to $2.45 each. Wake up the
neighbors...

<me is green with envy> What are you doing with your slow old P II 233???

Consider throwing it my way <grin> I'm still rendering on a P150.
(although I might put in a gloat about the new 8.4 GB hard drive I got)
<grin>

And I'll agree with the recomendations to add more memory.
The aforementioned P150 has 64 MB and runs OK.

accelerated game, that's the way to go.

If you're not a game junkie, then send that computer to me and I'll give you
my PII-266! It's got 96MB RAM! That's an upgrade! If anyone cares
(probably no one) here's MY system specs:

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Acer Aspire
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
-Intel Pentium II 266MHz
-96MB RAM (expanded from 32. . .BLARF!)
-ATI Rage Pro 2D/3D accelerator (integrated. . .2MB SGRAM)

-Creative Labs Sound Blaster AWE64. . .512KB on board (added on)
-OLD SOUNDCARD-Crystal Semiconductors AW35 (sucked! gone for good)
-1.44MB Disk Drive
-1.2MB Disk Drive (don't call me a caveman :)
-Acer 32x CD-ROM Drive
-512KB L2 Cache
-4.3 GB Hard Drive (controller 1 master, one big FAT32 partition)
-2.6 GB Hard Drive (controller 2 slave, one 800MB FAT16 partition, several
Linux mount points 1.8 GB in all)
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I think that's about it. I'm a gamer (obviously...) and an musician for
Trax in Space (www.traxinspace.com) and I try to stay upgraded (hard for a
14 year old, though).

Adios!

-Ian

P.S. If anyone cares, my artist name on Trax in Space is Spectere. Now go
listen to some of my songs. (I'm still a beginner at composing, though :)

P.P.S. If anyone doesn't know what Trax in Space is, it's based on music
like the old Amiga MODs and it's younger relatives (like S3Ms, 669s, ITs,
XMs, stuff like that). It even has some [legal] MP3s!

No SGI uses propritary memory so you have to buy it from them. What
until Sony and Toshibia release their chip. I forget what it is called
(all that comes to mind is wet dream, which graphics junkies will have
about this chip) It looks amazing, do out in the new playstation.

HUH??? What r u on about???

I was talking about SGI's new workstation... you know, the new NT series
that uses NT instead of Irix/SGIOS/UNIX (and all other combinations
thereof...)

It'd be nice to be able to run MAX on a system that has Quad Xeons... Ah
well... I think I'll just go back to druling over them...
