I have to agree. Think you can make them a little smaller for those of
us who do not have a T5 internet connection?

I've got a bad connection regardless of my upgraded V.90 modem. I use
AOL and I *should* be getting a 56K/V90 hookup at their end. Nope, 26.4K
the sign-on speed shows. I get up to 28K+ sometimes at a good web site
apparently but these newsgroups slow me down to those 0.1K numbers too.
The connection rate will get to 10's of K when good.
OT posting here but maybe someone should start a subject about the
connection (u/l and d/l) speeds at p.g. so as to figure possible
improvements, or at least to gripe or boast about our modems ;)

I don't have much to add to what others have said, but I too think the old one
looks much better! Although the new one does have the highlights the other one
needs. Other than that though the old one is better. I also saw you ocean movie,
and I have to say that it is amazingly good! Again though the movie ocean needs
the same improvements the still ocean does.

Oh and about the download speeds. I like you have a cable modem so for me it
isn't and issue, but I can see why others are complaining, instead of posting
the old image again just put a link or put a note pointing to the previously
posted image.

I thought the original was just about perfect, and I don't like the
new one at all (sorry :-) Any plans to release the source to the
original? I would love to render enough full-screen frames to be
a screensaver (I know its been done, but I really like the ocean).

I have been experiencing the same behaviour for some time now and
have given no small amount of thought on the subject. I know that I
am getting max connection speeds for my pitifull 33.6 modem and like
you say when this server is working right speed is not an issue.
Instead what I think is the problem is not the server itself but it's
connection to the internet.
I suggest the reason for the stalled/slow access on this server is
due to the system it is connected to. It is probably a high volume
nerwork with possibly older equipment and the Pov internal server
gets shoved aside during high volume periods. I doubt that there is
much that Pov admin can do about it except move to a community with
faster and more capable equipment. That would probably be cost
prohibitive as I seem to recall hearing that this site is coming to
us as a result of donated space and connection access.

I'd have to say that I think the first was indeed the most realistic
ocean rendering that I've seen with POV to date. I've lived on Lake
Huron most of my life, and this image, and the animation even more so,
almost exactly resemble the lake on a calm day. As far as the specular
reflection goes, I wouldn't worry about it so much. This image could
very well be a pre-dawn setting and therefor (in theory and experience)
only lit diffusely. Excellent job. I, also, would be very interested
in the techique, if not the code, that you used to model it.

Hey i am surprised about that because my connections to this Newsserver
is relatively fast ( about 3 to 5 k Bytes per second with ISDN ) and that
from germany. Or can it be that the server resides around europe ?

On a good when downloading news from this server I get 1Kps, but
the norm is somewhere between 0.1 - 0.5 Kps.

For me the images are a bit slower but if I am downloading a
.zip file I see my downloads averaging about 2.8 - 3.2 kps.
This is of course when the the system isn't in one of it's
sluggish periods. A vague reference from the past leads me
to believe that this server is physicaly located somewere on
the west coast of North America and somewhat near where I
live give or take a few hundred miles. I may also be confusing
it with the i.r.t.c. server so this may be totaly wrong info.
Treat it as hear say and not as fact.

I must say that the older ocean is the most realistic I've seen! Keep it,and
keep the new sky...I'd like to see that.
