I have been doing more work on the the image, however I'm not sure if it
looks better or if the additions don't just add more problems? I'm still
not finished, I'd like to add a drum set and a piano, and a sheet music
stand. And some more things to go in the display case. I liked how the
last image showed the instruments up close, hmm maybe there is a camera
angle that combines the two??

Also could someone help me with something here? In this image I wanted
to get the look of a store at night. You know, where the only lights
that are on are the display case lights and lights in the front. What I
did was to put a single light in the display case and several spot
lights for the hanging halogen lights. But I've had a really hard time
making the light in the display case look right. In this image it is too
bright, I want it to look like a bright florescent light but not light
the whole room! I tried to simply change the fade_distance and power on
the light but for some reason I had to change the fade power all the way
up to 30 before I saw any appreciable effect, anyone know why this might
be?

By the way the reason for the grainy shadows is cause I used an area light in
the display case and turned down the number of sudo lights to help render
time.

I'm wondering what would happen if you:
1) got rid of the area_light and just stuck with the spot lights.
2) filled the room with very subtle media ( like dust )
3) raised the general ambience of the store, display area and all objects
4) relied on a supportive light source, perhaps light coming from a street
lamp in front of the store or from the other side of the street - maybe even
have the light react with the glass of the display window, i.e refraction,
filter, etc.

My two cents, for what it's worth. ;-]

p.s. nice progress on the trombone.

Thanks for your suggestions. I am particularly interested in your suggestion for
adding a media to the room, what effect do you have in mind generating with the
media? However by the time I got to reading your post I had already fixed much
of the lighting problem and added some more instruments. I am about to do a
final rendering, well it might not be completely final, it depends on how I'm
satisfied with the results of the large image. I will post the results here in a
few hours when done. Then take a look at that one and let me know if you think
any of the below still applies to it.

:-)

I was thinking of a "mood" thing, really, and was wondering of the effect of having
some floating dust particles in the air. I don't know why, but I keep seeing your
image as if it was set in the evening, the shop is closed, the air is still and all
the dust kicked up from the day's activities is still lingering about... ( of
course, not a lot of dust )
I slapped together a real basic image to hopefully show what I'm babbling about.
When I converted the original to .jpg the quality crapped out so I'm posting both
.tga and jpeg (for anyone who can't view targa) and the media declaration in case
you're interested.

KB-

#declare Media=
  media {
  intervals 40
  scattering {1, rgb 0.0095}
  samples 1, 5
  confidence 0.9999
  variance 1/1000
  ratio 0.9
}

Looks better than the last, much so..
The increased distance makes the sax look better, since I can't see enough
details to be bothering you about them... *hehe*

well, keep it up.
