Haven't posted much myself lately and with all these fancy particle kinds of
things being done I couldn't resist any longer. Maybe think of this thing
as a macro particle... or whatever. :-)
A few renders posted at p.b.i. recently, if you don't already know.

Note: This was rendered with the beta 8 of 3.5 and I had a problem with the
radial pattern used for the shutters. To animate I needed a radial texture
map using the original radial pigment pattern in that. Somehow it shifted
in an unpredictable way, I never did get it aligned the same as the
nonanimated version was. It's fairly straightforward were it not for that.
The radial pattern is simply a segment applied to the final radial and
rotated then translated into place. I can see no reasoning for the shift in
y direction I had to use in order to compensate for the change. If I can
I'll come up with example to post in p.b-t.

Thanks for having a look, just don't expect much please.

VERY cool... good geometry and NICE color scheme. What's it
going to be for? Working on a short film or something?
Tell MORE!

Only thing that might add to it that occurs to me (OTTOMH):
Maybe the shielding(?) should not all open and close at the
same rate and time, but with little variations built in...

have fun!

Thanks Peter. Only a little POV diversion I had been putting off since
seeing the 1950's (or '60's?) movie and thought to myself, "Hey, I could do
that! Simple CSG stuff in POV-Ray."
Right you are about variations. The things (shutters) are cable-controlled
and probably shouldn't be moved in precise unison.
What I definitely wanted to do is get the shock aborber plunger things to
move in relation to contact with things. A job well suited to trace().

Forget what I said. I'm certain it was just the geometry of the
pattern-within-pattern kind of thing, I suspected as much. The translating
and rotating involved had confused me.
Don't want people thinking radial pattern is messed up in the beta version
of POV, it has enough troubles these days without me making things worse
;-)

Looks extremely cool, even 15 years after... cool enough that I ask you
now whether I may C64ize/AtariSTize your animation! May I?

See you in Khyberspace!

Yes. Why wouldn't I? :)

I don't remember anything about that, except for the Cavorite Sphere itself.
Don't know if I ever fixed it.

Did I post the scene file?

I remember I thought about using 'trace' to activate the plungers where they hit
the ground, probably never did. Always so much left undone. And I remember
having plenty of trouble with the windows, isosurface moonscape and black
radiosity artifacts in the metal sphere.

Bob
