This is from an idea I had about 20 ! years ago.  I had made a color pencil
drawing in the early '80s of a view from above the asteroids surface.
This is not something I'm going to be able to do easily in POV-Ray I fear.  A
lot of media-in-motion stuff this will be.  It already looks better than any
drawing I could ever do, major reason I really like 3D renderings.
I'm going to have to figure a good way to move the ring as the asteroid goes
through.  The hole I made in it in tests was left out because it was so awful.
Well, here's the start of what could be a failure.

to go in.

i think you could do it with a csg'ing and invisable cone that follows the
rock, and cuts a hole in the planet ring

then by using an 'inner ring' that is not usied in the csg, prevent the hole
becomming a solid cut-out

That might eventually be what I'll do, in part anyway.
I had tried a rescaled asteroid as the cutaway and it just wasn't looking
right, mostly because of the fouled up way I put this thing together.  Plenty
of rotates and translates going on.  I should be able to get it better.
A cone sounds very easy, think I'll try that for now.  The secondary ring idea
is good but I was thinking more along the lines of a warp turbulence in the
main media to go with the cutaway originally.
The fiery plume I want to add is also giving me trouble, both in implementation
and in (artists) conception.  :-)

This one is 120 frames, slower so it looks much better in time scale alone.
I removed the fiery plume I was working on simply because it's going to need
more thought.  I left the ring/asteroid contact point though.

Looks nice, but the ring needs work of course.  The asteroid should leave
some kind of hole in the ring and there would be particles from the ring
influenced by it too.

The asteroid also seems to round, such small objects usually have a more
irregular surface.

Well, it's a few hundred kilometers across.  About the size of Vesta and,
surprisingly to me, similar in appearance because I just now looked up a web
page of info and pictures of it:

I might still change it to be closer to that kind instead.  It's no doubt the
speed of the animation that causes the misconception of smaller size.
Very limiting when trying to do such large scale scenes as a animation.  I've
already decided I'd try to break it into parts with nearby and far away views
intermingled, that way there won't be so much motion involved.

How do you know the asteroid is small.  That is a gas giant, the roid
could be as big as earth.
