Just an idea - if you're posting an animation that requires some special
codec, like Divx, it would save those of us who don't want to go hunt down
and install additional codecs the time of downloading unusable animations if
everyone posting those things would mention it in the subject line. It
doesn't help to list the additional requirement in the body of the post,
because that part doesn't become visible until after the animation file
itself is finished downloading. I'm sure there are many fine codecs
available out there, but I don't want to install any more stuff than
necessary on my computer because of the increased chances of crashes,
clashes, etc.  ;-)

shows on mine.  i use netscape.  the body pops up and then the file
downloads.

What's so special about DivX besides being a really great codec? Or
tdo you consider "special" a codec which is not supported by MicroSoft
and hence unavailable by the automatic codec download feature of Media
Player? MP is known to have problems even with some 100% standard-
compliant MPEG animations but that is irrelevant to your question,
sorry.

A modern operation system should not be afraid of a codec. Even less
so if it aims to bring multimedia technology to your home computer.
I've never had a codec crash on me (under Windows). Granted, I've had
a *player* crash but that was the player's fault because the anim in
question opened well in other apps using the same codec.

Putting aside my slight disagreements with the above points, I agree
with your main suggestion to indicate the coded and version in the
subject line, and a link to a download site in the body should also be
of help.

But the player may be. In my case my default player, Irfanview, goes 
bazurk. No progress-bar/framenumber-bar. Also stop/kill Irfanview can only 
be done via the taskmanager.
Windows media player latest-1 shows a strange colour band on the bottom of 
the sequence.
Please use MPEG-1, MPEG-2 or GIF(I know, I know) everybody can view these 
(I think).

Yes that was DivX, the format now discussed is actually called DivX;-)

Did you download and install the DivX;-) codec previously? It can't
jsut appear on your machine, you know...

firstly GIF? no, never in a million years, might as well post fli or flc's,
and i dont render in full colour to have it destroyed converting it to 256.

i am unable to make mpeg's directly, and am far from happy converting one
lossy codec to another, might as well not bother !

after all DivX;-) is only a video codec !!. its not wrapped up in its own
peice of bloated spyware, like real player which most people seem to have
installed

    I don't think so, I kinda notice when those things happen because of my
zonealarm settings. I just got the new version a few days ago (ok, maybe two
weeks) and I don't think it has downloaded -anything- yet.

    Of course, there is a good chance that the new version uses the
downloaded codecs from the old version. In which case I could have
downloaded it months ago...
