Is there a tutorial, or a program anywhere, to help skinning models
(like in Quake)...

I've downloaded a couple of .3ds models and converted them to .udo for
use in Moray, and I've had a bash at skinning it (it's a lil Homer
Simpson), but having no luck at all.

Is there a program like QMe (Quake Model Editor) that gives a 3D view
you can paint directly on? Or at least a way to "export" a skin to a
bmp or whatever so I can edit it in photoshop?

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

(I'm assuming you mean freeware/shareware: otherwise there would be a lot
more:-))
The modelling programs:
Blender (www.blender.nl) - also includes tutorials for 'painting' on
the site; Anim8or (www.anim8or. ; AC3D (www.ac3d.org); 3dcanvas
(www.amabilis.com) ; Nendo etc. Also www.3dlinks.com should be having a
few more links/tutors on this topic.

Programs for exporting the 'skins' ('unwrapping' the model):
objuvpov (only obj files, I think)
lithunwrap (I'd prefer this since it can handle many different types of
files; also it has a 3dview where you can examine the model by re-importing
the painted maps) Includes tutorial on site
(http://www.geocities.com/lithunwrap/)

Also a program for painting the meshes & exporting to pov (and perhaps
Moray) - Materialize3d (http://www.indotek.com/material.html)

Hope this helps,

Regards,
---Anoop

Sorry, meant uvmapper (www.uvmapper.com) - includes a nice tutorial by
Gilles Tran on uvmapping a human face.

Hey Anoop,

Thanks a lot for those. The only program that seemed useful for Pov was
Materializer. Unfortunately it kept crashing :`(

But, while searching around hotbot.com I came across this URL...

http://www.spiritone.com/~english/cyclopedia/bottle.html

Which gave me something to start from.... So, I fired up Moray, imported
a .udo/.inc combo of Homer Simpson I'd converted over from some .3ds
file I found on the web, and got to work. It took me about an hour to
"colour it in", but I've attached the result so you can have a look.

It's far from perfect, and I'm sure if I moved the object in any way,
I'd have to totally redo the image maps, heh, but I'll get used to it.

Thanks again,
John

Glad you found what you were after but in the future please do not
post binary attachments in a non-biaries group. moray.binaries
would have been an appopriate place with a reference to it in your
message.

Cheers,

Hi Axe,

Sorry to hear about that. But I'd have thought that doing
this would be a
snip in something like AC3D (can save in pov format) or
Anim8or (saves in 3ds format which you can convert to pov
using 3dwin. More powerful than AC3D but slightly tedious
'modular' way of working.) Even lithunwrap/uvmapper with
3dWin. Still...

Thanks. Had come across it myself quite some time back but
had tucked it in a corner & forgotten about it. Should come
in useful now as I dig deeper into povray.

That's (the model) nice work for a beginner (??). (And
there's no reason
that the map should move when you move the object if you
have uvmapped it) Incidentally, I suppose you know about the
mesh (3ds/obj, I think) import plugin by Enzmann. AFAIK you
can use it to import meshes which can be used in CSG.

Also this might interest you:
http://www1.sphere.ne.jp/mizno/ : Metasequioa which has some
very nice features. Also it can be used with Hamapatch which
does very nice organic/sketch-design work.

-Anoop

Well, the AC3D site didn't want to load when I went to it, but I'll
check it out again later.

Well, that's what I did with a couple of .3ds models that did have
maps. Unfortunately, they didn't translate too well. :`(

Maybe it was because I was outputting to udo/inc, I'll try putting
straight out to pov and see what happens.

That's what I used as a base to figure it all out.

Hehe, I wish I could take credit for it. It's a .3ds I found that I
converted with 3dto3d to .udo/.inc. At the moment homer's my "test
subject".

Not in the MeagPov sense, no. I put it on basically the same way as the
tute I posted the URL for. Looks ok from the front, and he does rotate
and move in any way, but I've still got to tweak things a little :)

Nope, didn't know about that :)

Nice one, thanks. I just downloaded Hamapatch, so I'll check that out.
