I am a new user of moray and povray. I have been reading through teh help
files and can't figure out how to really edit shapes. Okay, I create a
sphere for example. Now I know how to resize more and rotate it, but lets
say I want to bend it in to diffrent shapes, or pull part of the mesh out,
how do I go about doing that. I just cant' figure out how this program
could be used for creating anything other than standard shapes, but I know
that is cause I am missing something huge, please help.
Thanks

You aren't missing anything. You are using a primitive object. What you
need to do is import a mesh of triangles that look like a sphere as a CSG -
then you can edit each individual triangle.

Could you please explain this in more detail, or point me in the direction
of something that will. BTW, thanks for your prompt response to the last
question.

moray is a solid modeller and you use many primitive objects in
Constructive Solid Geometry to form more complex objects. All native
pov images use this type of modelling. pov and moray can both import
meshes created in other apps however. if you are brand new and haven't
seen my xwing pics posted in p.b.images, take a look. everything
(including the top, rear and front fuselage details as well as the
canopy) except the fuselage is made from primitives. the fuselage was
made in spatch and exported as a moray udo. in 3ds max, you can still
use CSG primitives, but you also have the option of converting it to a
mesh. that's the only thing you can't do with moray. however, with a
little creativity, you can work around just about anything. good luck.

In POV-Ray, a sphere is a sphere, not a manipulateable mesh of
triangles. Same counts for most of the basic shapes with the exception
of bicubic patches. If you want to model something more complex, CSG
or Constructive Solid Geometry is what you need. With it, you can
intersect, subtract, merge and unite different basic shapes. You also
have blobs, known as metaballs in some other packages. It may sound
lomited at first but just see some recent postings here or some
entries in the IRTC to see what one can do when one masters the tools
POV has to offer.
If pulling at a sphere is what you're really after, why don't you try
Rhino, sPatch, HamaPatch, Moonlight Atelier or other NURBS or Bezier
modellers? With the model ready, you can use it in a POV scene.

Moray is a 'solids' modeller, you start by creating primitives, such as
spheres, cubes etc etc, and then use csg to subtract one shape from another
try this, create to objects, overlap them slightly, create a csg object and
add both of the primitives you just made, and then set the csg to
'difference' and render, more dfetail? add more !!
its not as limiting as it first sounds, and renders so much quicker than a
comparable (and highly dtailed) mesh object
its great for almost all man made ogjects, not good for organic or ergo
designed objects - eg very curvy objects
but look at things around you, eg a pen, is mostly cylinders, your house is
just a box
there are limitations with csg, and i would not suggest you use it for
everything, but for 90% of what you may want to model it will do, and give
you a better quality output than triangle based object, and renders so much
faster.
i suggest you go to the povray.org links page, and download spatch, its the
best nurbs based modeller i have every used, and its really easy to use, and
you can import your creations straight into moray

Correction:
sPatch is not a NURBS based modeller. It is a bicubic patch based
modeller.

Mark,
Try Strata 3D - its a FREE 3D modeller/animation tool. You can find it at
www.3d.com and download it from there. It is 22meg in size. You can do a
lot with this product.

Could someone tell me where to get spatch, the links from povray and other
sites to it seem to be down.
Thanks
Mark

The original home page for sPatch is down but there is an alternative
download site for it at -
