I am taking a 3ds file i found in 3dcafe and trying to textures it so i
can render it. but i have one problem... the UDO and INC file i created
for it is a WHOPPING 110 MB in size! any way to get around this?

PS i am using a P120 1.2GB hd with 24 MB of ram
I CAN load the INC file. just not work with it in real time...
i have to wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait for
the scene to redraw every time i switch windows.....

Waiting again!

I'm not sure there is a way around the large UDO file. But if you use Chris
Colflax's Compressed Mesh macro you might be able to reduce the size of the
INC mesh by up to 70%, plus it adds a whole lot of neat features like the
ability to warp, morph and even grow hair and objects from the surface of
the mesh. I have never used it though you I don't know if it will work for
your situation.

The UDO is simply a collection of points and edges between the points to
construct a mesh that Moray uses to show the object. If you don't really
need that much detail of the object in Moray, you may consider using a very
simplified UDO mesh, for example a simple bounding box (8 corners with 12
connecting edges). You can easily write an UDO like that by hand. If you
want, I can help you with that.
The UDO file (und thus the memory-usage in Moray) would be drastically lower
(neglectable in comparison to the filesize you have now), but the rendered
output would be the same, since you wouldn't touch the actual POV-Ray INC.
The downside is, that you don't see the shape of the object in Moray
anymore, but only the box-placeholder. So if you really need to see the
shape (for example for some very tricky placement), you have a problem :-)

Johannes.

Since you didn't mention how you are converting the 3DS mesh to a
UDO/INC pair, you may want to look at 3DWinConverter (at
www.stmuc.com/thbaier). It allows you to set a threshhold angle which
reduces the number of lines in the UDO display.

I used the 3dwincoverter but that is what gives me teh 120 UDO/INC files but
if i use the Win3ds2pov program i get 70MB......which is till not small enough
for me...

P.S. i was wrong about teh file size in the original post. the file was bigger
than i said!

When you choose the Output directory, try holding the Shift key. It'll
pop up an Options dialog where you can increase the Edge angle.

Did you use the Options dialog to increase the Edge angle?

how does one use that dialogue, Lutz? I'm unsure, and as great a ulility 3Dwin is,
its not very well documented. A higher value does what?

Hmm. That would be a better question for Thomas to answer.

> A higher value does what?
A value of 0 shows every edge. A value greater than 0 starts removing
edges. The value is in degrees. An edge is removed (from the wireframe
display ONLY) if the two adjacent triangles that form that edge form
an angle of less than 180-angle then the edge is removed. In other
words, if the plane of one triangle deviates from the plane of the
other triangle by less than the angle, it is removed.

An angle of 15 degrees is a pretty good default. If you want really
basic outlines you can go up to 60 or so.
