Has anyone made their own clothes for Poser? If so, is it possible using
free (or really cheap) tools? I looked over one example which used 3dsmax,
but I don't want to have to fork out money like that. I'll confess that I
haven't tried Wings yet, assuming that's possible.
I would like to make some of my own clothes, just because hardly anyone else
makes "normal" clothes, but if it turns out that it's incredibly difficult,
I probably won't bother.

I never tried it but it is certainly difficult. Indeed, some casual types of
clothes (coats, shirts, jackets...) are hard to find and the existing ones
they don't fit well. It's quite disappointing.
In any case, I doubt that Wings would be the right tool for modelling
clothes, because for this one needs surfaces that can be opened and not
solids, and the possibility to use the original model as a basis. One thing
for sure is that a very good, very precise modeller is required and those
don't come free :(
If I do it one day (I need a pair of "normal" panties for Vicky...) I'll
probably use Rhino. Otherwise there's Blender...

Some time ago i showed a demostration using my mechsim patch to simulate
clothing. This works quite well for shirts, light dresses etc.
Heavier clothes are more difficult because for realistic appearance you
will need detailed meshes and stiff material takes very long to simulate.

Not sure what is necessary in a modeller to do that, myself. Non
"wings-edged" mesh support at the least. I suspect that a tool such as
you find in Maya that allows you to create a series of points in space
on a surface, then derive a spline from them, then 'loft' a series of
these splines into a second surface, all through the gui, would be
helpful. But I am sure there are many techniques. There are also many
modellers in freespace now. Art of Illusion has its fans. But I am not
familiar with its toolset. You really should check sourceforge, and
other freeware venues to see what is going on.
Same as Gilles, I would probably not try it in Wings in its present
state. I've had little sucess getting Wings to support Poser mesh, or
even Wings mesh that is washed through Poser. I believe people that
create and sell Poser clothes are using highend tools.
The author of Anim8or makes an effort to support the Poser community and
I like what he is trying to do. I personally find the interface a little
weird but quite fast to learn, never-the-less. It also supports all
three types of 'mesh', also boning, and animation. Last time I used it,
couple of years ago on W98, it crashed a lot. That together with the
interface is what drove me away from it. Personally I anticipate
learning a least one other tool than Wings, for boning tasks, and the
handling of 'open' mesh. Might be Anim8or. Also watch digit magazine
and others for giveaways. I can't imagine this niche (freeware to
handle Poser related mesh tasks) will stay unoccupied for long. It's a
topic I wouldn't mind investigating but my plate is quite full at the
moment.

I've made some simple clothing using Hamapatch. The knife-slicer really
helps. Make sure you don't slice nice, even squares -- get it all
chaotic-like to get the most realistic fabric :-)

Well, as far as making clothes for Poser, no I haven't tried that, it looks
complicated.
I have however made clothes for my Poser figures, in Hamapatch. I find
splines very easy to work with for this, after importing the Poser figure
into Hamapatch (via Wings to convert to .mdl) I "draw" the outline and
shapes I want by placing single splines around the figure. Then I hide the
figure, and start duplicating the splines and connecting them to get a
surface, then unhide the figure again and do final shaping and details.

That's exactly how it's done in Rhino. I never got further than creating
small things in one single piece like jewelry or armour plates though. Full
suits are more challenging due to the seams, folds, apertures etc.

Do you mean the Simcloth part of MegaPOV? I've wondered about using that,
after importing the unclothed models into POV. Something like draping a
cloth over someone doesn't sound hard, though I've never tried using a Poser
model. But it sure doesn't seem like it would be easy to get "sleeves" and
"pantlegs" to work well, especially after the figure is posed.
However, if creating my own Poser clothes is pretty much out of the
question, I'm going to have to look at all alternatives.

Do you have some examples somewhere? I'd like to see how they turned out,
if you don't mind. Or if you're like me, it's 99% experimentation with 1%
results.
BTW(completely off-topic), I visted your website, and one of the links was
to a person named "John Uhri". I loosely worked with him on a project about
8 or 9 years ago for Auto Glass Specialists in Madison, WI. He was really
into mountain biking at the time. The project we were working on was doomed
from the start, I'm sad to say, but I still have fond memories of flying out
to Madison. I hope I left a relatively good impression for John, but I
wouldn't be surprised if I didn't. Unfortunately, I was working on a doomed
project in a language I didn't fully understand (VB), and it probably
showed. But now-a-days, it's good for a laugh.

MegaPOV 1.0 comes with a sample scene demonstrating a simple t-shirt.
Not on a human figure but on some kind of clamp but it should be enough
for a demonstration. Getting the sleeves stay around the arms when
starting the simulation is indeed not always easy but the code i used is
also extremely simple.
