OK, this is REALLY off topic, but this is one of the very few places where I
might find people who can provide genuinely helpful information on the topic,
which is: Story or puzzle games for the PS2 that are intellectually challenging
(or at least amusing) without being insanely violent or imposing manual
dexterity requirements on the order of:


Triangle - Square - Circle - Triangle - Triangle - Square - Cross - Triangle -
Square - Square - Circle - Triangle - Cross - Triangle - Square - Circle -



I, the person who has probably played fewer video games than anyone not living
deep in the interior of the Amazon rain forest, have just been given a PS2 by

clever story that emphasizes problem solving over body count, but I'll take any
help I can get.  I've hardly played anything, so old stuff that can still be had
is fine.  Thanks in advance for all replies.

Two suggestions in the RPG field :

-Dragon Quest 8 : a very classic "Japanese" RPG, but really magnificent. 
Simple story, beautiful design, a real jewel to play. You might get 
bored by the many battles (absolutely no dextery required) if you don't 
like the genre though.

- Okami : a totally original RPG, with unique graphical style (inspired 
by traditionnal Japanese paintings, among other). I have not played it 
yet, but if you believe the critics the story is also very good.

And one which is more or less in the plateform genre (althoug you don't 
need so much dexterity) : Ico. A nice concept (you must go out, but are 
accompanied by a girl, who has no special agility, etc.), and an 
incredible atmosphere.

PS: at the moment, a PS2 is certainly a better option than a PS3 : tons 
of great games (the choice among good games is really huge), and they 
are cheap!

I can't recommend the wonderful "Shadow of Colossus" enough.  Wonderful setting,
a little action, challenging puzzles (finding and defeating the colossi, that
is)... It may require a little hand dextery, but isn't really an
action-oriented game.

It's kind of a sequel to the early PS2 hit ICO, which is about just as amazing.

Very good choices, indeed!

Might want to checkout the espionage thrillers Metal Gear Solid, which require
more stealth than fighting...

By rather incredible coincidence, I picked up a used copy of DQ-VIII last
Saturday.  Your evaluation is, IMHO, spot on... great art, not-so-bad story
with fairly imaginative characters, numerous REALLY annoying rounds of "swat
the monsters for no particular reason". Also, although the story is reasonably
good, the player is pretty much along for the ride with few REAL decisions to
make. "Save kind and saintly old Abbot from perishing in flames rather than
standing around like a complete knee-biter ?   [ ]Yes  [ ]No".

(Similar reaction to "Bard's Tale" which has more cleverness and less tackiness
than the "Quest for Coin and Cleavage" subtitle might suggest, the innuendos
being of the parody tongue-in-cheek type. Did anyone else think the Bard
sounded an AWFUL lot like the GEICO Gecko?)

Sorry. I'm a PC and XBox gamer.

iirc, the Final Fantay series are PS2 games. Dunno if you're even slightly
intereted in RPG type games. If you are, see if you can get one of the older
ones of those. You should be able to get a second-hand copy pretty cheap.

I have a question about playstation 2:

  Can you connect it directly to a CRT monitor?

  The reason I ask this is that there are so many great games which I would
like to play but are irritatingly only available for PS2 that I have been
thinking about purchasing some PS2 for cheap at some flea market or something
so that I can play those games.
  The problem is that I don't own any kind of TV whatsoever. The only way
I could play the PS2 is if I could connect it to my CRT. (Of course this
means I cannot keep my PC running at the same time, at least not without
buying an expensive switch, but it's better than nothing.)

They are not terribly expensive. This one can be had for less than 350 S

  You mean the only way to play a PS2 with a monitor is for the PS2
to make a VGA -> PAL conversion, and then use a device which makes a
PAL -> VGA conversion? That doesn't make too much sense. (Not to talk
about the decreased image quality, as PAL is interlaced and has limited
resolution.)

  Why couldn't they think that hey, perhaps someone *might* want to
play a PS2 with a monitor instead of a TV?
