Ok... My old PC died a few weeks ago and I'm now up and running with Vista
on a Core 2 Duo. I had read that was the best processor for POV-Ray.
Anyways... I'm still getting stuff up and running and just hit my first
POV-Ray issue. I was about to start work on a short animation and to that
end I wanted to edit the resolution INI file. I click on tools, then click
on Edit resolution INI file, and up comes Notepad. I make a few changes as
normal and try to save the changes and all I get is a cannot create the
file error message. It simply says "Make sure that the path and file name
are correct." They are and I'm pretty sure this in a Windows Vista issue
with all its new security. I've now tried opening the file with several
other editor's and I've even now tried to edit the file in DOS mode all
with no luck.
I'm sure there has to be a simple solution to this but for the life of me I
can't figure it out at the moment.

Ok... now I'm really pulling my hair out. I just tried to get around the
INI file problem by putting in all the setting on the commend line.
POV-Ray works fine when I pick one of the options from the INI file and
don't use any command line options. However, I'm now trying to get this
command line to work:
+H800 +W800 +FN +A -J +KFI1 +KFF36 +KI0 +KF1 +KC
And every time I click the run button I get a POV-Ray not responding
message.

Have you tried logging in with administrator privileges to see if that
would prevent this problem? AFAIK (without having Vista), writing into
%ProgramFiles% and the likes is no longer allowed for normal users,
although some form of file system virtualization should kick in.
Maybe this even relates to your render problem, as POV-Ray does
seem to want to touch some files under ini and renderer/rerun.

Make sure that you have "ownership" of the whole POV-Ray folder. It may be owned
by Administrator or even System. If that's the case, you don't have write/edit
privileges, only read.
Switch user to Administrator, change ownerchip to you or Everyone, return to
your usual acount and you should be good to go.

I've now tried just that...
If I open notepad by right clicking and selecting "run as
administrator" I can edit and save the INI file. However I still can't
make an animation. If I select one of the normal options POV-Ray runs and
does make an image. Like this:

As soon as I select the animation option I entered I just get this:

The INI file contains what you see commented out in the sky.pov file. I've
even now right clicked on POV-Ray itself and ran it as an administrator but
it makes no difference.
Arg...
Any other ideas,

I'm not falimiar with "ownership" of given directories. Can you tell me how
to check/change that? However I now have ran POV-Ray as an administrator
and it still doesn't respond when I try to make an animation. I'm thinking
this must be another problem.

Try running as XP (sp2) in compatability mode. Vista doesn't like people
editing files in the Program Files area, nor does it apparantly appreciate
modifications to .ini files (I'm not sure if that's part of the Program
Files thing or not). You might also install to another directory than the
default Program Files and see if that helps.
From what I've read, in compatability mode, it pretends to write to files in
Program Files, but actually does it to a directory in your user files...
meaning that another user on the same computer couldn't access your
modifications.

Update:
Just got home from work. Downloaded the file (save as...)
Select: "Open folder" when download comlete
Right click povwinxx (mine's 36, ymmv)
Click run as administrator
When you get to C:...POV-Ray for Windows
click on browse.
Select a different folder, such as in documents or somewhere besides Program
Files
That was suficient for my to run the program, and it is letting me change
the ini for different picture sizes.
If problems persist, open POV-Ray for Windows 3.6bin
right click on pvengine
select properties, then compatability tab
click on the box to run as windows xp sp2

Sorry... I was out of town over the weekend. Just now getting back to this.
I've now uninstalled POV-Ray and reinstalled it again. This time I
installed it to:
C:UsersCarlPOV-Ray for Windows v3.6
(There are a couple back slashes in there that I don't expect to show up
when thos post goes through... not sure why.)
I can now edit and save the ini file without having to run notepad as an
administrator. However I still can't use any of the animation options
without POV-Ray just coming back and saying (Not Responding). I have ran
POV-Ray as an adminstrator and I've now also tried changing the
compatability tab to windows xp sp2. Neither had any effect. POV-Ray
works if I don't use any animation options, say I change the resolution,
but as soon as I specify some animation options it just doesn't respond.
Am I the only one having this issue with Vista?

Eudy Silva just set me strait. To get POV-Ray 3.6.1c and Vista to work
together with the animation options one must choose "Properties".
Under the "Compatibility" tab, mark the checkbox for "Disable visual
themes", then click the OK button.
I just tried it and it WORKS!!! Don't have a clue why but it does. Is this
a bug? Should I report it?
